The Fate of Iron Formations in the Deep Mantle: Constraints From Iron Oxide Reduction Kinetics Experiments

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 10, 28 May 2026.
Abstract Dense sedimentary iron formations (IFs) subducted into the mantle during Earth's early history, may have descended to the core‐mantle boundary where they could exert strong control on its thermal and seismological properties. A key unanswered question is the extent to which IFs retain their oxidized character in the much more reducing mantle ...

Surface Ocean Chlorophyll: Do the Green Get Greener and the Blue Bluer?

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 10, 28 May 2026.
Abstract Long‐term marine ecosystem changes are uncertain, partially because detecting them is challenging. Recent evidence suggests a “green‐get‐greener‐and‐blue‐bluer” phenomenon characterizes these changes for surface ocean chlorophyll concentrations (Chl) over the 21st century, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere, driven by ocean warming.

Physical Mechanisms Governing the Response of Oceanic pCO2 in the Northern South China Sea to Tropical Cyclones

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract This study investigates the response characteristics of oceanic pCO2 in different regions of the Northern South China Sea (NSCS) to tropical cyclone genesis frequency (TCF) on interannual timescale, and clarifies the response mechanisms. Results show that reduced Sea Surface Temperature (SST) induced by TCs suppresses pCO2 in the northwestern ...

Sources of Uncertainty in Ocean Net Primary Productivity Projections Under Climate Change

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract The divergent representation of ocean net primary productivity (NPP) in Earth system models (ESMs) causes uncertainty in NPP projections, which must be reduced to effectively inform marine management and climate mitigation strategies. Here, we investigate the sources of uncertainty in monthly‐mean NPP by seven ESMs under four emissions ...
