Abstraet--A broad fjord is defined here as a stratified fjord whose width exceeds the first baroclinic radius defined from the stratification. When a longitudinal wind blows along such a fjord, the response entails upwelling on one side and downwelling on the other. The physics are identical to those of the classical theory of coastal upwelling, except

A rigid open-ended pipe is submerged in the ocean below the troughs of the surface waves and held fixed in the vertical position, the lower end being at or below the depth of wave influence. When surface gravity waves propagate past the pipe, water flows up as long as waves are present.

Investigations on the benthos in upwelling areas are briefly reviewed, with the main emphasis on standing stock studies. As expected, the benthic standing stock is high beneath highly productive surface waters. However, when the oxygen content of the near-bottom water is depleted by intensive degradation of organic matter, hydrogen sulfide may develop ...

Steady wind parallel to the coast generates upwelling and the influence of the spatial structure of the wind or the coastal indentattions must be taken into account in the determination of the lifting of the thermocline. A shallow water model is used to display the response of the ocean around a cape. The response to steady wind forcing is described in
