The garden dormouse is Europe's most severely declining rodent species. We found its occupancy to depend on shrub cover and regenerating forest stages in the climate‐change‐induced spruce dieback areas in Central Germany. Forest management in those areas requires a mosaic approach to felling and avoidance of topsoil removal for the species' occurrence.
