Raman Spectroscopy of Amphibole Inclusions in Emeralds

open access: yesJournal of Raman Spectroscopy, EarlyView.
Emeralds containing elongated amphibole inclusions from Austria, Russia, Zambia and Zimbabwe were investigated with an optical microscope and Raman spectroscopy. The inclusions have various sizes and shapes; curved inclusions are frequently observed in emeralds from Zimbabwe and rarely in those from Zambia.

Mathematical Modeling of Measured Recalescence Velocities

open access: yesMathematical Methods in the Applied Sciences, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT A moving‐boundary problem of synchronous directional and volumetric solidification in undercooled liquid drops is formulated and solved. Directional solidification is caused by the temperature gradient along the spatial direction, whereas volumetric growth of new phase elements is caused by the melt undercooling ahead of the phase transition ...

Tracing holotype trajectories: Mapping the movement of the most valuable herbarium specimens

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Global efforts to protect biodiversity depend on fair access to key plant specimens. This study examines the distribution of 119,361 holotypes—unique herbarium specimens used to formally describe new plant species. By linking collection and storage data, we found that holotypes are increasingly held closer to their places of origin, particularly in ...

Biocontrol by a native hemiparasite: Rapid suppression of noxious invasive plants in a field experiment

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, EarlyView.
Melampyrum arvense was demonstrated as a biocontrol tool suitable for containing two harmful invasive species. After the suppression of the invaders, an additional introduction of native species by seeding or green‐hay transfer could facilitate community restoration. Abstract Alien plant invasions are a recognised threat to biodiversity.
