Ab initio modeling of oxygen impurity atom incorporation into uranium mononitride surface and subsurface vacancies

open access: yes, 2012
The incorporation of oxygen atoms has been simulated into either nitrogen or uranium vacancy at the UN(001) surface, sub-surface or central layers. For calculations on the corresponding slab models both the relativistic pseudopotentials and the method of

Temperature Tunable Optical Properties of Tetraheptylaluminum(III) Porphyrin Toward Molecular Thermometer

open access: yesChemPhysChem, EarlyView.
An amphiphilic aluminum(III) porphyrin (AlC7P) has been developed, and its temperature‐dependant aggregation‐induced photophysical properties have been investigated. The observed photophysical changes due to the aggregation in haxanes make AlC7P a suitable candidate for a luminescent molecular thermometer.

Uncovering ESG Ratings: The (Im)Balance of Aspirational and Performance Features

open access: yesCorporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) scores are crucial for evaluating corporate sustainability. However, the undisclosed and complex methodologies used by rating agencies have raised concerns about their reliability and consistency. This study replicates LSEG's ESG scoring methodology using machine learning to shed light on the key ...

Fifty years of research on the Joulters ooid sandbody—Impact on carbonate sedimentology and diagenesis and lessons learned from an invaluable analogue

open access: yesThe Depositional Record, EarlyView.
The Joulters ooid sandbody of northern Great Bahama Bank is a vast expanse of muddy ooid sands partly rimmed by clean ooid sands and formed into a relatively thick layer of significant extent. Knowledge of the development of depositional and diagenetic patterns in the Joulters example has forwarded our general understanding of carbonate sedimentology ...

Interplay of defect cluster and the stability of xenon in uranium dioxide by density functional calculations

open access: yes, 2010
Self-defect clusters in bulk matrix might affect the thermodynamic behavior of fission gases in nuclear fuel such as uranium dioxide. With first-principles LSDA+U calculations and taking xenon as a prototype, we find that the influence of oxygen defect ...

Discovery of Late Holocene‐aged Acropora palmata reefs in Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida, USA: The past as a key to the future?

open access: yesThe Depositional Record, EarlyView.
Emblematic of global coral‐reef ecosystem decline, the coral ecosystem‐engineer Acropora palmata is now rare throughout much of the western Atlantic. We report for the first time, a significant record of late‐Holocene A. palmata populations that existed from ~4500 to 375 years before present in the Dry Tortugas, FL, USA.

Stabilization of Tungsten-Uranium Dioxide Composites Under Thermal Cycling Conditions [PDF]

open access: yes
Uranium losses during thermal cycling of tungsten - uranium dioxide composites to 2500 C in flowing purified hydrogen for specimens initially containing 35 volume percent uranium dioxide were reduced by the use of thorium dioxide, calcium oxide, or ...

Geological and geotechnical challenges on the Great Dyke of Zimbabwe and their impact on hardrock pillar design

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The Great Dyke of Zimbabwe is notable for its rich platinum group metal deposits but poses significant geological and geotechnical challenges due to its complex rock types and structural features. Traditional pillar design methods are insufficient for addressing these complexities; the study suggests incorporating advanced techniques such as machine ...
