Nonstoichiometry in Uranium Dioxide

The Journal of Chemical Physics, 1958
A thermodynamic study of the uranium-oxygen system, primarily in the single phase region UO2–UO2.20, has been made at temperatures of 1150° to 1350°K. An electrochemical technique was used to obtain emf measurements on uranium oxide half-cells.

Creep of uranium dioxide

Soviet Atomic Energy, 1973
1. We have presented some experimental results relating to the creep of polycrystalline sintered UO2 over the temperature range 1600–1900°K for stresses of 0.4–4 kg/mm2. 2. The deformation of the UO2 samples during the tests leads to the formation of inhomogeneities and the development of cracks. 3. The average creep velocity

Activating Uranium Dioxide

Industrial & Engineering Chemistry, 1961
Results of a study of the mechanism of UO/sub 2/ activation by successive oxidation and reduction are presented. Surface area, pore size, and x- ray measurements showed that activation of aggregates of microcrystalline UO/sub 2/ resulted from separation, but not reduction in size, of primary crystallites. Hydrofluorination of UO/sub 2/ to UF/sub 4/ was

Determination of Stoichiometry of Uranium Dioxide. Polarographic Determination of Uranium(VI) in Uranium Dioxide

Analytical Chemistry, 1960
The deviation of the composition of uranium dioxide from the stoichiometric oxygen--uranium ratio of 2.000 is calculated from the assay for the uranium(VI) in the oxide. The sample is dissolved in hot phosphoric acid under an inert atmosphere to preserve the oxidation states of the metal, and the uranium(VI) is determined polarographically in a ...

Dissolution of uranium dioxide in supercritical fluid carbon dioxide

Chemical Communications, 2001
Uranium dioxide can be dissolved in supercritical CO2 with a CO2-philic TBP-HNO3 complexant to form a highly soluble UO2(NO3)(2).2TBP complex; this new method of dissolving UO2 that requires no water or organic solvent may have important applications for reprocessing of spent nuclear fuels and for treatment of nuclear wastes.

Rapid determination of uranium dioxide in uranium phosphides

The Analyst, 1968
A rapid gravimetric method for the determination of uranium dioxide in uranium monophosphide and triuranium tetraphosphide is described. The phosphide compounds are dissolved in an ethyl acetate-hydrochloric acid solution and the remaining uranium dioxide oxidised in air to triuranium octoxide. A precision of ±0·2 per cent.

Diffusion of uranium in titanium-doped uranium dioxide

Journal of Alloys and Compounds, 1993
Abstract The diffusion coefficients of 233U in (U1−yTiy)O2+x (y=0, 0.001, 0.007) were measured in the oxygen partial pressure range from 10−8 to 10−2 Pa at 1673 and 1773 K by the α-energy degradation method. The ratios of the diffusion coefficient of uranium(DU) in titanium-doped UO2+x to those in undoped UO2+x were about 6 for y=0.007 at 1673 K and ...

Nonstoichiometry in Uranium Dioxide

The Journal of Chemical Physics, 1966
An extension of Anderson's formulation of the defect theory of nonstoichiometry is used with an oxygen—interstitial oxygen-vacancy model to calculate the composition of the uranium dioxide phase at the lower phase boundary and the relative partial molar thermodynamic functions for oxygen at compositions ranging from the lower phase boundary to UO2.08 ...

The oxidation of uranium dioxides

Journal of Biochemical Toxicology, 1965
AbstractThe oxidation of three types of uranium dioxide (UO2) material has been investigated in the 120—360° range. In UO2 powders, of surface area greater than about 2 m.2/g., oxidation was diffusion‐controlled up to U3O7 which oxidised to U3O8 above about 240°.
