Thorium Oxide and Uranium Oxide Cleavage
Journal of the American Ceramic Society, 1959Cleavages of synthetic thorium oxide and uranium oxide crystals were measured on a two-circle optical goniometer in relation to the crystallographic axes as determined by x-ray diffraction. The cleavages of the thorium oxide were found to be good. The uranium oxide subjected to similar investigation was found to have no cleavage. (J.E.D.)

Molecular beam study of photoionization of uranium and uranium oxide
Optics Communications, 1983Abstract Crossed laser molecular beam configuration was used to study the photoionization of U and UO by the UV-lines of an argon ion laser. Photoionization efficiencies of both U and UO were found to be line sensitive. Photoionization by the 3638 A line was observed for the first time.

The oxidation of uranium dioxides
Journal of Biochemical Toxicology, 1965AbstractThe oxidation of three types of uranium dioxide (UO2) material has been investigated in the 120—360° range. In UO2 powders, of surface area greater than about 2 m.2/g., oxidation was diffusion‐controlled up to U3O7 which oxidised to U3O8 above about 240°.

Electrolytic Production of Uranium Metal from Uranium Oxides
Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Process Design and Development, 1962Massive uranium metal which exceeds AEC specifications for purity was produced with nearly 100% recovery from uranium oxides. Electrolysis at 1150 deg C in a fused fluoride electrolyte produces molten metal. Oxides are excluded from the metal product to obtain well coalesced metal, by incorporating the oxide to be reduced in a consumable uranium oxide--

Chemical reactivity of oxide materials with uranium and uranium trichloride
Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering, 2010A graphite crucible is used for the manufacturing of uranium ingots in the uranium casting equipment of the electrorefining process. Uranium and uranium alloys are typically induction melted in graphite crucibles under a vacuum condition; however, due to the chemical reactivity of uranium and most alloying elements with carbon, a protective ceramic ...

Corrosion Properties of Oxidized Metallic Uranium and Uranium Carbide
ECS Meeting AbstractsThe long-term strategy for nuclear waste disposal involves the isolation and containment of spent fuel in a deep geological repository (DGR). CANDU fuel pellets are made from uranium dioxide, which exhibits exceptional wasteform properties due to its remarkably low solubility under the neutral or slightly alkaline conditions expected in a DGR ...
