Small cities face greater impact from automation

open access: yes, 2017
The city has proven to be the most successful form of human agglomeration and provides wide employment opportunities for its dwellers. As advances in robotics and artificial intelligence revive concerns about the impact of automation on jobs, a question ...

The Morphology of Urban Agglomerations for Developing Countries: A Case Study with China [PDF]

open access: yes"Econophysics and Economics of Games, Social Choices and Quantitative Techniques," Basu, B.; Chakrabarti, B.K.; Chakravarty, S.R.; Gangopadhyay, K. (Eds.) 2010, ISBN: 978-88-470-1500-5, 2010
In this article, the relationship between two well-accepted empirical propositions regarding the distribution of population in cities, namely, Gibrat's law and Zipf's law, are rigorously examined using the Chinese census data. Our findings are quite in contrast with the most of the previous studies performed exclusively for developed countries.

Stochastic stability of agglomeration patterns in an urban retail model [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
We consider a model of urban spatial structure proposed by Harris and Wilson (Environment and Planning A, 1978). The model consists of fast dynamics, which represent spatial interactions between locations by the entropy-maximizing principle, and slow dynamics, which represent the evolution of the spatial distribution of local factors that facilitate ...

Macroscale Superlubricity with a High Load‐Carrying Capacity Enabled by Nitrogen‐Doped Graphene Quantum Dots in Lubricated Silicon‐Doped Amorphous Carbon Films

open access: yesSmall Structures, EarlyView.
Achieving superlubricity in aqueous‐lubricated systems for energy conservation remains challenging. Here, a newly developed nanolubricant based on nitrogen‐doped graphene quantum dots (NGQDs) enables robust superlubricity between steel and silicon‐doped amorphous carbon film.

Drivers and challenges of RIS3‐related university engagement: Insights from five European regions

open access: yesRegional Science Policy &Practice, EarlyView., 2022
Abstract Universities have long been considered key players in regional innovation systems and innovation‐driven regional development. In addition, as part of the quadruple helix, they can play a major role in RIS3 design and implementation by acting as civic universities.

Subsidies for Intracity and Intercity Commuting [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper analyzes subsidies for intracity and intercity commuting in an urban economics framework with two cities and agglomeration externalities, where workers may commute within and between cities.

Unravelling the forces underlying urban industrial agglomeration [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
As early as the 1920's Marshall suggested that firms co-locate in cities to reduce the costs of moving goods, people, and ideas. These 'forces of agglomeration' have given rise, for example, to the high tech clusters of San Francisco and Boston, and the automobile cluster in Detroit.

Linking Dynamic Capabilities to Export Performance in Africa: The Moderating Roles of Institutional Support, Sociopolitical Context, and Perceived Corruption

open access: yesThunderbird International Business Review, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT While the literature on internationalization in Africa is growing, much of it has traditionally emphasized the role of multinational corporations operating on the continent. In contrast, fewer studies have focused on the international entrepreneurial activities of indigenous African firms, particularly, in relation to how internal capabilities

Assessing the role of spatial externalities in the survival of Italian innovative startups

open access: yesRegional Science Policy &Practice, EarlyView., 2023
Abstract The paper provides novel empirical evidence about the effects of spatial externalities on the survival of innovative startups in Italy. Using geocoded firm‐level data, we build micro‐geographic measures of specialization and diversity that are robust to the modifiable areal unit problem.
