City limits in the age of smartphones and urban scaling [PDF]

open access: yesComputers, Environment and Urban Systems (2020), 79: 101423, 2020
Urban planning still lacks appropriate standards to define city boundaries across urban systems. This issue has historically been left to administrative criteria, which can vary significantly across countries and political systems, hindering a comparative analysis across urban systems. However, the wide use of Information and Communication Technologies

Spatio-temporal difference analysis of land use efficiency in Lanxi Urban Agglomeration based on SBM-Undesirable model [PDF]

open access: yesE3S Web of Conferences, 2020
Based on the connotation of green development, SBM-Undesirable model was used to measure the land use efficiency of Lanxi Urban Agglomeration in 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018, and Theil Index and Spatial Autocorrelation Methods were used to reveal the ...

Defining urban agglomerations to detect agglomeration economies [PDF]

open access: yesCottineau, C., Finance, O., Hatna, E., Arcaute, E., & Batty, M. (2018). Defining urban clusters to detect agglomeration economies. Environment and Planning B: Urban Analytics and City Science, 2399808318755146, 2016
Agglomeration economies are a persistent subject of debate among economists and urban planners. Their definition turns on whether or not larger cities and regions are more efficient and more productive than smaller ones. We complement existing discussion on agglomeration economies and the urban wage premium here by providing a sensitivity analysis of ...

Phase transition in urban agglomeration and segregation [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
A model of the urban agglomeration and segregation is formulated, in which two types of agents move around on the square-lattice aligned cells. The model is shown to exhibit, when the density of agents are varied as the control parameter, various phase transitions representing appearance of urban aggregation, segregation and social disorder.

The Effects of Inequality, Density, and Heterogeneous Residential Preferences on Urban Displacement and Metropolitan Structure: An Agent-Based Model [PDF]

open access: yesUrban Science, 2 (3), 76, 2018, 2017
Urban displacement - when a household is forced to relocate due to conditions affecting its home or surroundings - often results from rising housing costs, particularly in wealthy, prosperous cities. However, its dynamics are complex and often difficult to understand.

The Impact of Spatial Structure on Economic Efficiency of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Megalopolis in China

open access: yesComplexity, 2020
This study constructs a theoretical model and empirical framework concerning how spatial structure affects economic efficiency using data on the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) megaregion between 2008 and 2017.

Urban Scaling of Cities in the Netherlands [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We investigated the socioeconomic scaling behavior of all cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants in the Netherlands and found significant superlinear scaling of gross urban product with population size. Of these cities, 22 major cities have urban agglomerations and urban areas defined by the Netherlands Central Bureau of Statistics.
