WETWALL - an innovative design concept for the treatment of wastewater at an urban scale [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Rising temperatures, increasing food demand and scarcity of water and land resources highlight the importance of promoting the sustainable expansion of agriculture to our urban environment, while preserving water resources.

A Dual‐Functional Biohybrid Nanorobot to Synergistically Eradicate Biofilm and Degrade Antibiotic Resistance Genes

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A biohybrid nanorobot integrating lytic bacteriophage N4 with Pd nanozymes is developed for targeted eradication of multidrug‐resistant E. coli biofilms. Synergistic bacterial lysis and ROS‐mediated oxidation enable simultaneous biofilm removal and antibiotic resistance genes degradation, maintaining high efficacy in complex wastewater environments ...

Empowering local governments to make a disaster resilient built environment within Sri Lankan Cities [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Urban areas are growing very rapidly all over the world, particularly in developing countries. As a result of rapid urbanisation, the world’s population is increasingly concentrated in large cities leading to unplanned urban development with ...

Surface temperatures in New York City: Geospatial data enables the accurate prediction of radiative heat transfer [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Three decades into the research seeking to derive the urban energy budget, the dynamics of the thermal exchange between the densely built infrastructure and the environment are still not well understood.

Urban Environments and Environmentalisms

open access: yes, 2018
Within academia, professional practice, and stakeholder groups concerned with environmental issues, urban environment carries many meanings. This chapter demonstrates the framing of environmental problems, especially as concerns cities, is driven by different normative and theoretical positions.

Phase Fraction Modulation Enhances Li+/Na+ Diffusion Disparity in Spent LiFePO4 Cathodes for Efficient Lithium Extraction from Brine

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A direct cascaded utilization strategy for spent LiFePO4 batteries efficiently extracts lithium from brine, embodying the “urban mining” concept. Phase fraction modulation revealed its significant impact on local bond lengths of crystal structure and the Li/Na diffusion energy barrier, identifying the best material (Li0.19FePO4) for lithium extraction.

Population and single cell metabolic activity of UV-induced VBNC bacteria determined by CTC-FCM and D2O-labeled Raman spectroscopy

open access: yesEnvironment International, 2019
The occurrence of viable but non-culturable (VBNC) bacteria will result in significant underestimation of viable bacterial counts in drinking water. Whereas, much is unknown in characterizing their viability.

Spatially Selective Solvation Chemistry by Local Charge Enrichment for Stable Potassium‐Metal Anodes

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A MoC/NC functional intermediate medium preferentially interacts with KFSI to reconstruct the interfacial solvation structure and form a KF‐rich inorganic SEI. The synergistic integration of the electronically insulating SEI and MoC/NC suppresses electron tunneling, enables fast and balanced K+/electron transport, and promotes uniform K deposition for ...

Bionic Solar‐Powered Heavy Metal Trap for Eco‐Friendly Sludge Drying and Simultaneous Electricity Generation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Herein, we propose a solar‐powered heavy metal trap (SPHT) for sludge disposal. The indoor experiments demonstrated that the sludge water content decreased from 90 % to 31 %, coupled with a decrease in heavy metal content to 6 % at most. Furthermore, the designed SPHT generated an initial potential of 0.10 V, and monitoring this hydrovoltaic potential ...
