Polyploidy in urban environments
Trends in Ecology & Evolution, 2022Polyploidy is a major driver of evolutionary change in plants, but many aspects of polyploidy in natural systems remain enigmatic. We argue that urban landscapes present an unprecedented opportunity to observe polyploidy in action. Integrating polyploid biology and urban evolutionary ecology, we discuss multiple factors expected to promote polyploid ...

Adaptation to urban environments
Current Opinion in Insect Science, 2022Despite widespread evidence of urban evolution, the adaptive nature of these changes is often unclear. We review different phenotypic and molecular lines of evidence used for assessing urban adaptation, discussing the benefits and limitations of each approach, and rare examples of their integration.

Urban Greenery as a Resource for Urban Environment
2021In many suburban districts, urban greenery is an important component in terms of quantity and quality in the urban landscape. The benefits on the environment on the quality of human life and the economic impact on the surrounding built heritage make the natural environment a collective asset for the entire ecosystem.

Neighboring in an urban environment
American Journal of Community Psychology, 1982Neighbors are an informal resource who may act individually to provide socioemotional support to each other as well as collectively to ameliorate problems in their residential environment. To explore when neighbors are likely to interact and provide aid and emotional support for each other, 702 residents living in a neighborhood in Nashville, Tennessee,

The practice of pica, the compulsive ingestion of nonfood substances over a sustained period of time, was studied in 553 African American women who were admitted to prenatal clinics in Washington, D.C. Dietary, biochemical, and psychosocial correlates of the pica practices of a subset of this urban population are presented in this paper.

Motion planning in urban environments
Journal of Field Robotics, 2008AbstractWe present the motion planning framework for an autonomous vehicle navigating through urban environments. Such environments present a number of motion planning challenges, including ultrareliability, high‐speed operation, complex intervehicle interaction, parking in large unstructured lots, and constrained maneuvers.

Explores the impact of Africa’s rapidly growing urban population on local resources and the environment, acknowledging the clash between Western focus on sustainable development and the lived realities of residents of often poor, informal settlements.

Wind Flow in an Urban Environment
Environmental Monitoring and Assessment, 1991The wind environment at ground leven in built-up areas is influenced by the extremely complex interaction amongst incident wind, mean vertical velocity gradient, turbulence and the shapes, sizes and layouts of building. Random layout of buildings could generate zones of overspeed and vortices in the connecting passage way between buildings, terraces ...

Rapid Urbanization and the Urban Environment
1999Abstract This chapter reviews the range of environmental hazards present in urban areas in Africa, Asia, and Latin America and their impact on human health. It discusses the groups that are most vulnerable to environmental hazards and suggests that low income groups (and, within such groups, women and children) bear most of the health
