Mitigation strategies for regional heat island effects: integrated network construction of cold and heat islands

open access: yesEcological Indicators
The Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect is a major environmental challenge in global urbanization. As urbanization progresses, the UHI effect in individual cities has expanded regionally, forming Regional Heat Islands (RHI). However, strategies for mitigating

The urban heat island : causes and effects

open access: yes, 2016
The Urban Heat Island Effect has become one of the world’s leading urban environmental issues of this century. Urbanization has increased concerns about the UHIE, especially in terms of human health and a healthy functioning urban environment. The UHIE results in significant and sometimes dramatic increase in air temperature change between the urban ...

Green swans and blue skies: Climate change and insolvency risk for financial institutions

open access: yesInternational Insolvency Review, EarlyView.
Abstract This lecture in honour of the late Gabriel Moss QC and Ian Fletcher QC examines the challenge of climate‐related financial risk. Prudential regulators and central banks recognize that the systemic nature of climate‐related financial risk makes it an emerging vulnerability relevant to cross‐border insolvency resolution.

The influence of the spatial characteristics of urban green space on the urban heat island effect in Suzhou Industrial Park

open access: yesSustainable cities and society, 2018
Urban green spaces can mitigate urban warming problems to some extent. However, the cooling effect of plants differs spatially and temporally, and with plant features.

Development and appraisal of long-term adaptation pathways for managing heat-risk in London

open access: yesClimate Risk Management, 2017
The risk of residential overheating and mortality is increasing due to the effects of global warming and the urban heat island effect and needs to be addressed through climate change adaptation.

Decadal Changes of UV Aerosol Optical Depth in Hobart, Australia Measured With a Brewer MKIII: Relationship to Bushfire Events and Climate Indices

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
Monthly average aerosol optical depth at 320 nm obtained with a Brewer MKIII spectrophotometer for Hobart, Australia (42.8806° S, 147.3250° E) over a 21‐year period. There is a linear trend of 15.4% per decade. There are 9 months when the average aerosol optical depth exceeds twice the monthly standard deviation.

Disproportionate exposure to urban heat island intensity – The case study of Győr, Hungary

open access: yesHungarian Geographical Bulletin
Extensive research has shown that urbanisation has a profound effect on the local climate system, leading to the formation of urban heat island.

Incorporating Crowdsourced Data Into Operational Products: A Perspective From a National Meteorological Service

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
Future advances in the fields of meteorology and climate science will require scientists to increasingly strive towards the provision of new high‐resolution services. In this context, the development of new products and services along the weather chain may greatly benefit from the adoption of second‐and‐third‐party data (23PD) as a source of high ...

Tropicalization of the Temperate Zone: Spatiotemporal Variability of Winter Warming and Declining Freeze Days Across the United States

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
Unique characteristics of winter daily minimum (Tmin) and maximum (Tmax) temperatures and freeze days across the conterminous United States from 1952 to 2024 are examined. Results show spatial heterogeneity in Tmin/Tmax warming rates across the tropical‐temperate transition zone in the southeastern United States, and that the highest temperature on the
