A review of the current status of flood modelling for urban flood risk management in the developing countries

open access: yesScientific African, 2020
The prevalence of flooding events and the associated risk in the urban areas is an increasingly important issue of global significance, although it is more critical for the developing countries (DCs), such as Nigeria, where the hazard is often poorly ...

Phase Fraction Modulation Enhances Li+/Na+ Diffusion Disparity in Spent LiFePO4 Cathodes for Efficient Lithium Extraction from Brine

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A direct cascaded utilization strategy for spent LiFePO4 batteries efficiently extracts lithium from brine, embodying the “urban mining” concept. Phase fraction modulation revealed its significant impact on local bond lengths of crystal structure and the Li/Na diffusion energy barrier, identifying the best material (Li0.19FePO4) for lithium extraction.

Bionic Solar‐Powered Heavy Metal Trap for Eco‐Friendly Sludge Drying and Simultaneous Electricity Generation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Herein, we propose a solar‐powered heavy metal trap (SPHT) for sludge disposal. The indoor experiments demonstrated that the sludge water content decreased from 90 % to 31 %, coupled with a decrease in heavy metal content to 6 % at most. Furthermore, the designed SPHT generated an initial potential of 0.10 V, and monitoring this hydrovoltaic potential ...

Winter Roost Preferences of Crows in Beijing City

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
During the winter season, an extensive population of crows (predominantly the carrion crow Corvus corone) seek refuge in Beijing's urban landscapes for roosting, subsequently generating noise and droppings that adversely affect the quality of life of ...

Managing our urban future

open access: yesInternational Journal of Applied Earth Observation and Geoinformation, 2000
Abstract Urban growth is inevitable over the next two decades. The bulk of this growth will take place in less developed countries. This presents a formidable challenge for urban planers and managers. With this in mind this paper considers some of the ways urban planners can respond to this challenge. The discussion is divided into four sections. The

Urban streets functionality as a tool for urban pollution management

open access: yesScience of The Total Environment, 2013
Pollution derived from traffic can be considered one of the major problems of modern cities. Although considerable efforts have been devoted to gathering information about pollution and its control, little attention has been paid to the analysis of relationships between pollution distribution and town planning.
