The optimum control of traffic in urban networks is an important requirement of city authorities as they seek efficient and sustainable transport. A feature of most urban networks is the high density of city streets with numerous road junctions, which require efficient control mechanisms if congestion is to be contained.

Real time simulation of urban traffic
2009 European Control Conference (ECC), 2009In this paper a hybrid model is presented to predict the behavior of traffic in urban area. Intersections and on/off-ramps are modelled by Colored Timed Petri Nets while road links are modelled by a stochastic discrete time model. It is assumed that vehicle routings at each intersection are stochastic.

Urban Traffic Monitoring System
2012Traffic video analysis is a challenging problem: crowded moving vehicles with various appearances, illumination changes, and speed variations according to the traffic flow. In this paper, we propose an efficient single-camera Traffic Monitoring System (TMS), which is capable of automatically analyzing the vehicles flow on urban streets in real time ...

A computer program has been developed to compute the trajectories of vehicles and platoons of vehicles as they move through an urban street network and on a freeway. It can be used to generate traffic patterns and determine performance measures for a wide variety of control strategies and is a new tool for the evaluation and design of candidate traffic

During the late 1950s, proposals were made that the linking and co-ordination of traffic signals, which had already been applied to produce green waves of traffic along major routes, could be extended to a network of highways over an area. Originally referred to as the area ‘control of traffic’, co-ordination over a network is now more usually termed ...
