Urbanization, cities and the urban environment [PDF]

open access: yesGEOUSP: Espaço e Tempo (Online), 2002
Este texto tem o objetivo de abordar o meio ambiente urbano a partir de uma ótica que não se restringe à preservação/proteção da "natureza" e dos recursos ambientais, mas, considera o ambiente construído pela apropriação e produção do urbano e do ambiente.

Trimerization of 1,2‐Diaminocyclohexane Catalyzed by a Metal–Organic Cage Tandem Catalyst with Dual Biomimetic Active Sites

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Dual biomimetic active sites, i.e., mononuclear {ZnII(L)(H2O)} and dinuclear {L2ZnII(CHO2)(OH)ZnIIL2}, have been successfully intergrated into a metal–organic cage, Zn20‐MOC. These two different active sites in Zn20‐MOC catalyze different steps of cascade trimerization of 1,2‐diaminocyclohexane. The mononuclear {ZnII(L)(H2O)} site catalyzes the initial

Abiotic Factors and Plant Communities Shape the Distribution of Soil Pathogenic Oomycetes in Chinese Grasslands

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The continental‐scale study reveals that soil phosphorus strongly predicts the richness of soil pathogenic oomycetes in Chinese grasslands, while precipitation and plant species richness drive their absolute abundance; modeling predicts ≈42% of grassland areas may face elevated oomycete disease risk under future climate scenarios, especially in typical

Community-Driven Salty Urbanism: Combating Coastal Erosion [PDF]

open access: yesUrbanism. Arhitectura. Constructii
Coastal erosion is a growing problem worldwide and seriously threatens coastal infrastructure ecosystems and communities, particularly in areas where urban development has encroached on natural shorelines. Salty urbanism, an approach to urban design that

WHERE DO YOU BREATHE? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The project wheredoyoubreathe.net consists of three elements: a photographic essay, an urban intervention, and a website. The photographic essay forms an investigation of the city through the act of walking. As opposed to the image of the city as a dense

Zoborg: On‐Demand Climbing Control for Cyborg Beetles

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A novel on‐demand climbing protocol enables Zoborg (a cyborg beetle from the living Zophobas morio) to seamlessly transition from horizontal floors to vertical walls. Multiple unrestrained mechanosensors allow wall sensing while electrical stimulation of the elytron initiates climbing. Leveraging the agile locomotion and exceptional adaptability of the

A Water‐Triggered Sensor for Self‐Powered Flood Alarming

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Urban floods related to global warming generally cause significant casualties. Traditional cable flood warning systems are costly, while wireless ones face power limitations. This research proposes a self‐powered flood sensor with a water‐triggered Galvanic battery, enabling rapid flood warnings with great promise of low cost and long service lifetime.
