On Galileo’s Tallest Column

open access: yesMathematical Problems in Engineering, Volume 2015, Issue 1, 2015., 2015
The height at which an unloaded column will fail under its own weight was calculated for first time by Galileo for cylindrical columns. Galileo questioned himself if there exists a shape function for the cross section of the column with which it can attain a greater height than the cylindrical column.

The Relationship between Plants Used to Sustain Finches (Fringillidae) and Uses for Human Medicine in Southeast Spain

open access: yesEvidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Volume 2012, Issue 1, 2012., 2012
We analyzed plants that are traditionally used by wild bird hunters and breeders to capture and promote captive breeding of Fringillidae (finches or songbirds) in the province of Alicante, Spain. The majority of plants used in songbird breeding have medicinal properties in traditional human medicine (48 different uses); thus, another main goal was to ...

Modelling migration dynamics of Common Cranes and Eurasian Spoonbills as hydrological flow

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
The migration of birds through a stopover site may be understood as a physical process of hydrological flow through a reservoir whose water levels rise and fall over a migration period. Hydrological flow models show promise as a way of integrating information on storage (daily counts of birds), inflow/outflow (number of birds arriving/departing each ...

Influence of Temperature, Agitation, Sludge Concentration and Solids Retention Time on Primary Sludge Fermentation

open access: yesInternational Journal of Chemical Engineering, Volume 2012, Issue 1, 2012., 2012
The aim of this research was to determine the influence of temperature, agitation, sludge concentration, and solids retention time (SRT) to obtain readily biodegradable organic matter on primary sludge (PS) fermentation, which would be used as substrate in a biological nutrient removal (BNR) process.
