Nanoengineering of Chitosan Sponges Via Atomic Layer Deposition of ZnO for Water Remediation Technologies

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, Volume 12, Issue 9, May 5, 2025.
Chitosan sponges are modified with ZnO through atomic layer deposition (ALD) to enhance water remediation. Characterization reveals the growth of defective ZnO, which improves the water stability of the sponges. The material's effectiveness is demonstrated through the removal of Direct Blue 78 dye and the photocatalytic degradation of Naproxen ...

All‐Optically Driven Optofluidic Light Modulator

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, Volume 13, Issue 14, May 16, 2025.
In this work, an all‐optically driven optofluidic light modulator is developed, based on the optical actuation of waveguided beams by liquid crystals confined in a microfluidic channel. The photovoltaic effect in lithium niobate is employed to control the alignment of the liquid crystal in the microfluidic channel underneath by a light‐induced electric

Suspended transport of gravel in rivers: Empirical evidence from the 2022 flood in the Misa River (Eastern Apennines, Italy)

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 50, Issue 6, May 2025.
In September 2022, a high‐magnitude flood in the Misa River (Italy) transported gravel in suspension, depositing it on superelevated terraces. This was driven by high water discharge, increased fluid density and an entrenched channel limiting widening.

Nanostructure of Unconventional Liquid Crystals Investigated by Synchrotron Radiation

open access: yesNanomaterials, 2020
The macroscopic properties of novel liquid crystal (LC) systems—LCs with unconventional molecular structure as well as conventional LCs in unconventional geometries—directly descend from their mesoscopic structural organization.

Late Holocene Evolution of the Lagoonal Harbour of the Punic Centre of Othoca (Western Sardinia, Mediterranean Sea)

open access: yesGeoarchaeology, Volume 40, Issue 2, March/April 2025.
ABSTRACT Geophysical surveys and multiproxy analyses of sediment cores have been used to reconstruct the palaeoenvironmental evolution of the Santa Giusta coastal lagoon (SGL), along the western coast of Sardinia. This area served as a natural harbour mainly during the Punic and Roman Republican periods (6th–2nd century bc).

The seasons of reformer urbanism in Emilia-Romagna

open access: yesIn_Bo, 2013
In 1971, the urban planning activity is transferred to the Regions, which become a laboratory able to  provide indications of extraordinary importance for national laws. In Emilia-Romagna, a so-called reformer urbanism is established.
