Clinical Assessment of Urethral Sphincter Function
Journal of Urology, 1993Measurements of urethral pressures, such as maximum urethral pressure, are widely believed to have relevance in the management of urinary incontinence despite evidence to the contrary. In this study maximum urethral pressure and the abdominal pressure required to cause stress incontinence were measured in 125 women with stress incontinence.

Musculus Sphincter Urethrae (Urethral or External Sphincter)
2001The musculus sphincter urethrae (urethral or external sphincter) has been the subject of numerous studies into the anatomical bases of urine continence. However, we are still a long way off from an integrated description of its anatomy tallying with the physiology of urine continence.

The Journal of Urology, 1998
We reassess the anatomy and topography of the female urethral sphincter system and its innervation in regard to urethra sparing anterior exenteration and other surgical procedures.Anatomical and histological studies were performed on 9 fetal specimens and 4 adult cadavers.

Electrodiagnosis of Striated Urethral Sphincter Dysfunction
Journal of Urology, 1979In many centers urethral striated sphincter electromyography has become an essential component of urodynamic testing. The urologist who uses this modality of investigation in an attempt to understand the pathophysiology of striated sphincter dysfunction must have some basic knowledge of electromyography.

The effect of vaginal delivery on the urethral sphincter
BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, 1988Summary. To investigate the actiological role of vaginal delivery in genuine stress incontinence we compared two groups of women who underwent full urodynamic assessment in our department. The women in the first group had competent urethral sphincter mechanisms and those in the second group had genuine stress incontinence.

Anatomy of the Urethral Sphincters and Supports
1990When a woman coughs, pressure in the urethra rises simultaneously with intra-abdominal pressure, preventing urine from leaving the bladder. When she increases her intra-abdominal pressure during voiding, however, urine flow can increase, and many women are able to evacuate their bladders without a detrusor contraction, simply by abdominal straining ...

Imaging the urethral sphincter with three-dimensional ultrasound
Obstetrics & Gynecology, 1999To image the striated urethral sphincter (rhabdosphincter) using three-dimensional ultrasound and to compare its size in women with genuine stress incontinence and continent controls.Women with no previous continence or prolapse surgery had transvaginal sonography using a 7.5-MHz mechanical sector endoprobe with real-time and three-dimensional ...

Urethral sphincter morphology in women with detrusor instability
Obstetrics & Gynecology, 2002To determine whether sonographic urethral sphincter morphology is different in patients with detrusor instability than in those with normal urodynamic testing.Patients from a population of women presenting for evaluation of urinary incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse underwent intraurethral ultrasonography before multichannel urodynamic testing ...

Interaction phenomena between a cuff of an artificial urinary sphincter and a urethral phantom.
Artificial Organs, 2019Male urinary incontinence is highly prevalent, leading to a miserable quality of life. The artificial urinary sphincter (AUS) is the device that closely simulates the function of the biological urinary sphincter.
