Ursus Americanus: The Idea of a Bear
2005The sound of splintering glass, the mesh, metal screen being torn from the window, shakes me. Instinctively I awake shouting, without thinking, still half-dreaming of something mundane and pleasant. The rotting wooden frame that holds the pane falls onto the foot of my bed, pushed in by the black bear outside my cabin.

Black bears (Ursus americanus) in northeastern Labrador
2001Ten black bears in the Voisey's Bay area of Labrador were studied in 1996 and 1997 using GPS and VHF radio telemetry. GPS collars recorded location and movement activity, but did not operate as long as expected. The short life span of the GPS collars was attributed to battery malfunction.

Mr. Sheffler is a naturalist with a lifelong interest in animals and much experience in field collecting of birds and mammals of western United States and Mexico.
