Case studies for teaching usability engineering

ACM SIGCSE Bulletin, 2004
A challenge in teaching usability engineering is providing appropriate hands-on project experience. Students need projects that are realistic enough to address meaningful issues, but manageable within one semester. We describe our use of online case studies to motivate and model course projects in usability engineering.

Usability engineering for mobile maps

Proceedings of the 4th international conference on mobile technology, applications, and systems and the 1st international symposium on Computer human interaction in mobile technology, 2007
Many applications for mobile devices make use of maps, but because interaction with these maps can be laborious the applications are often hard to use. Therefore, the usability of maps on mobile devices must be improved. In this paper we review the research that has been done to solve technical, environmental, and social challenges of mobile map use ...

Concurrent Usability Engineering

2000
Usability engineering lifecycle models have problems matching with concurrent product development practices. In this paper we describe what problems there are between usability engineering lifecycle and concurrent product development process and describe an example how this problem is handled at Nokia Mobile Phones.

Applying usability engineering in ABB

Proceedings of the 4th Nordic conference on Human-computer interaction: changing roles, 2006
This paper reports experiences from applying simple and flexible usability engineering methods to projects in a large multinational organization. The field of industrial control has traditionally been resistant to employing usability methods due to perceived complexity, difficulties in applying to the wide diversity of project types and low reward.

Applying discount usability engineering

IEEE Software, 1995
Usability engineering isn't just for the multimillion dollar companies with massive internal test labs. Jakob Nielsen, a distinguished engineer at SunSoft, relates how he and another designer (yes, a two-person project) employed low-cost, easily accessible techniques to perform several useful studies.

The Muse Method for Usability Engineering

1994
When this book was first published, recent aspects of human factors research had led to methodologies that integrated usability into the development of interactive systems. MUSE was one of the pioneering methods for Usability Engineering. It provides an environment in which human factors contributions can realise their full potential.
