From settler gardens to digital naturalists: human aesthetic preferences and land use changes facilitate the biogeographical expansion of a wild plant–virus interaction

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Anthropogenic facilitation of wild plants based on aesthetic preferences for particular traits can change the biogeography and ecology of natural communities. We use a mixed‐methods socioecological approach to characterize the ways in which humans interact with a common, widely distributed plant and a generalist viral symbiont that induces an ...

Developing High-Efficiency PCR Mini-Barcoding to Enforce Conservation Efforts Against Illegal Trade and Habitat Loss of Endangered Taxus L. in the Himalayas

open access: yesConservation
Environmental and ancient DNA are mostly present in degraded forms in nature. Plant forensics is necessary for plants like Taxus (Taxaceae), which is a medicinal, as well as poisonous, endangered plant.

Conservation gap analysis for wild grapevines (Vitis L.) of the Americas

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Wild grapevines (Vitis L.) native to the Americas are ecologically and culturally important plants that are also critical to the global cultivated grape industry as sources of traits for crop innovation, but many of these species are poorly documented and insufficiently conserved.

Building a genomic and herbarium biorepository for medicinal plants of the Western Ghats

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Medicinal plants support healthcare for millions of people and sustain livelihoods, yet many threatened species lack secure long‐term genetic protection. This study establishes a genomic and herbarium biorepository for medicinal plants of the Western Ghats, a global biodiversity hotspot facing intense human pressure.

Investigation of Some Functional and Ecological Characteristics of The Endemic Species Nepeta Eremokosmos Rech.F. and Its Conservation Status in Iran [PDF]

open access: yesمدیریت بیابان
IntroductionNumerous studies on the chemical composition of Nepeta species essential oils in Iran show that changes in chemical composition are influenced by various factors including geographical location, weather conditions, plant growth stages, and ...

Large language models unlock large text corpora in the search for data on medicinal plants and fungi

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Millions of people worldwide depend on plants and fungi for their healthcare needs, yet our understanding of which species are used medicinally—and how—remains fragmented and incomplete. As part of Kew's Plants for Health service, we developed a pipeline to mine large text corpora for information on natural products, initially focusing on the medicinal

Piper nigrum Has an Antitumor Effect Through Regulation of the Phosphatidylinositol 3‐Kinase Signaling Pathway in a Murine Model of Acute Myeloid Leukemia

open access: yesPhytotherapy Research, EarlyView.
Overview of the antileukemic effects of Piper nigrum extract in AML. P. nigrum reduced leukemic cell proliferation and glycolytic metabolism through modulation of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway. In vivo, treatment reduced leukemic burden, improved hematological parameters, prolonged survival, and modulated antitumor immune responses.

Facilitating macrosystem biology with organismal‐scale airborne remote sensing: Challenges and opportunities

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Emergent ecosystem properties, such as population and trait distributions, biodiversity and energy and water fluxes, occur because of the dynamic interactions of individuals in their environment.

Repeated trends in altitudinal gradients of diversity: How habitat filtering and biotic interactions structure ecological communities

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
This study reveals that tropical butterfly communities show remarkably consistent elevational patterns of diversity and phylogenetic structure across regions with contrasting evolutionary histories, demonstrating how regional species pools and local ecological factors jointly shape biodiversity along altitudinal gradients.

The Most Used Medicinal Plant Species of Dashtestan (Bushehr Province), with Emphasize on Their Traditional Uses

open access: yesJournal of Medicinal Plants, 2013
Background: Dashtestan, with 6371 km² area, is situated at 85 km in the east of Bushehr city. Influence of some important ecological factores, such as neighboring to the Persian Gulf, passing two rivers of dalaki and shapoor and also presence of southern
