Abstract: Many risk factors have been identified as having either a protective or a negative effect on the development of fibroids, but due to methodological issues and a lack of long‐term studies, the exact effect of these factors is ambiguous. In similar dispute is the proper treatment of fibroids. Recent technological advances have introduced newer,

Allelotype of Uterine Leiomyomas
Cancer Genetics and Cytogenetics, 1999Uterine leiomyomas are the most common benign tumor that arise from smooth muscle cells of the myometrium. Little is known about the etiology and pathogenesis of this tumor. To investigate the molecular pathogenesis of these tumors, we have conducted an allelotype of 102 leiomyomas from 12 patients, using 67 fluorescently-tagged oligonucleotide primers

It has been suggested that the development of uterine leiomyomas is positively influenced by an immune system in a chronically inflammatory state and that a lower level of regulating T cell (Treg cells) would play a central role. Since it has been suggested that the W620 variant of protein tyrosine phosphatase non-receptor type 22 (PTPN22) decreases ...

When uterine leiomyomas complicate uterine evacuation…
Contraception, 2010Case: A 38-year-old G4P2012 woman at 12 weeks' gestation was referred to me for an abortion. She had been turned away by several providers due to the presence of a large lower uterine segment fibroid that made her cervix inaccessible. Her obstetric history was significant for two prior spontaneous vaginal deliveries and one spontaneous abortion.

Pathophysiology of uterine leiomyomas
Biochemistry and Cell Biology, 1992Uterine leiomyomas is the most common benign neoplasia in women, one of the most frequent causes of infertility in reproductive years, and the leading cause for hysterectomy. The pathophysiology of uterine leiomyomas is uncertain. Therefore, therapeutic approaches have been primarily empirical. It is now well documented that growth factors control the

Uterine Leiomyomas and Reproduction
Obstetrics & GynecologyThere is a prevailing opinion by gynecologists, much of it based on expert opinion or anecdotal evidence, that myomas are detrimental to pregnancy. Newer data challenge much of this dogma, but incorrect assumptions remain. Although not impeccable, multiple data address the correlation between myomas and reproduction, and some emerging evidence ...
