Evidence, Age, and Thickness of a Frozen Paleolake in Utopia Planitia, Mars
Icarus, 1994Recent mapping studies west of Elysium Mons, Mars, have pinpointed subice features that suggest the existence of a frozen paleolake in Utopia Planitia as recently as 1.8 billion years ago. The subice features are interpreted to be hyaloclastic ridges and hills, table moutains, associated joekulhalaup deposits, and fluvial channels.

Abstract Results of our detailed geological mapping and interpretation of the nature and relative and absolute model ages of units and structures in the SW portion of Utopia Planitia (20–45°N, 100–120°E) suggest the following. (1) The size–frequency distribution (SFD) of craters that both are buried by materials of the Vastitas Borealis units (VB ...

Modeling concentric crater fill in Utopia Planitia, Mars, with an ice flow line model
Icarus, 2018Abstract Impact craters in the mid-latitudes of Mars are commonly filled to variable degrees with some combination of ice, dust, and rocky debris. Concentric surface features visible in these craters have been linked to debris transportation and glacial and periglacial processes.

Martian thermal-contraction polygons as sounders of subsurface properties in Utopia Planitia
On Earth, temperature decreases can cause the thermal contraction of ice-cemented ground. This forms polygonal networks of surficial fractures – called ‘thermal-contraction polygons’ (Washburn, 1956). Polygons exhibit different morphologies with time (Black, 1954): initially showing no relief (‘flat-centred ...Susan Conway+3 more

POSSIBLE ICE-WEDGE POLYGONS IN UTOPIA PLANITIA, MARS, AND THEIR POLEWARD LATITUDINAL GRADIENT
2019International audience; Introduction: Here, we describe and evaluate: a) the presence and distribution in Utopia Planitia (UP), Mars (40-50 o N, 110-124 o E), of small-sized polygons , (10-25 m in diameter), with low centres (lcps) or high centres (hcps) relative to their margins; b) the spatial , perhaps periglacial, association of these polygons ...
