UV-absorbing compounds in subarctic herbarium bryophytes

Environmental Pollution, 2005
The UV-B-absorbing compounds of herbarium specimens of 10 subarctic bryophyte species collected during the years 1926-1996 and available at the Botanical Museum, University of Oulu, were studied. We studied whether herbarium specimens reflect changes in the past radiation climate through their methanol-extractable compounds.

Excited states of menthyl anthranilate: a UV-A absorber

Photochemical & Photobiological Sciences, 2013
The photophysical properties of menthyl anthranilate (MA), a UV-A absorber, have been studied through measurements of UV absorption, fluorescence, triplet-triplet absorption and time-resolved thermal lens in ethanol at room temperature and/or 77 K. The phosphorescence and time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance spectra have also been observed in ...

Photostability of UV Absorber Systems in Sunscreens

Photochemistry and Photobiology, 2009
AbstractSunscreens are used to protect the human skin against harmful UV radiation. Today there is a trend toward higher sun protection factors (SPF) and better UVA protection. Methods for the assessment of SPF and UVA protection involve irradiation of the product, and the photostability properties of the sunscreen have an influence on its performance.

An overview of UV-absorbing compounds (organic UV filters) in aquatic biota

Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry, 2012
The purpose of this article is to summarize biological monitoring information on UV-absorbing compounds, commonly referred as organic UV filters or sunscreen agents, in aquatic ecosystems. To date a limited range of species (macroinvertebrates, fish, and birds), habitats (lakes, rivers, and sea), and compounds (benzophenones and camphors) have been ...

UV-B absorbance and UV-B absorbing compounds (para-coumaric acid) in pollen and sporopollenin: the perspective to track historic UV-B levels

Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology B: Biology, 2001
UV-B absorbance and UV-B absorbing compounds (UACs) of the pollen of Vicia faba, Betula pendula, Helleborus foetidus and Pinus sylvestris were studied. Sequential extraction demonstrated considerable UV-B absorbance both in the soluble (acid methanol) and insoluble sporopollenin (acetolysis resistant residue) fractions of UACs, while the wall-bound ...

Manufacture of UV absorbers and UV protection fabrics using microcapsules

Fibers and Polymers, 2011
This study aimed to develop UV protection fabrics by microencapsulation methods. The sol-gel method was used to manufacture spherical silica microcapsules in an O/W/O emulsion. UV protection fabrics were prepared by attaching microcapsules to cotton-knitted fabrics.

New UV absorbers for sun protection fabrics

Melanoma Research, 1996
Most people would answer yes. Awareness thus still has to be created: the answer is definitely no. Textiles provide only limited protection against UV radiation unless they are specially treated.
