Το UX δεν είναι ένας νέος όρος της σύγχρονης εποχής, αλλά ξεκίνησε να ερευνάται εκτενέστερα κατά το 19ο αιώνα. Αρχικά από την μελέτη αυτή απουσίαζε η κατηγορία των συναισθημάτων από την ανάλυση των καταναλωτών. Επικεντρώθηκαν μόνο στην πράξη της αγοράς ενός προϊόντος, στη χρηστικότητα που παρουσίασε αυτό και στην επιλογή του ονόματος.
