Expression and purification of E140 protein antigen fragments of Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium berghei for serological assays

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We provide a step‐by‐step guide for producing E140 antigen fragments from Plasmodium berghei (Pb1) and Plasmodium vivax (Pv1). Pb1/Pv1 are expressed in E. coli, solubilized by freeze–thawing, refolded by slow dilution, purified by affinity chromatography (IMAC), then concentrated and subjected to quality control.

Data of the COVID-19 mRNA-Vaccine V-Safe Surveillance System and Pregnancy Registry Reveals Poor Embryonic and Second Trimester Fetal Survival Rate. Comment on Stuckelberger et al. SARS-CoV-2 Vaccine Willingness among Pregnant and Breastfeeding Women during the First Pandemic Wave: A Cross-Sectional Study in Switzerland. Viruses 2021, 13, 1199

open access: yesViruses, 2021
Dr. Sarah Stuckelberger and her colleagues should be commended for their cross-sectional study assessing the willingness of Swiss pregnant and breastfeeding women to be vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2 [...]

Detecting Anti-Vaccine Users on Twitter [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
Vaccine hesitancy, which has recently been driven by online narratives, significantly degrades the efficacy of vaccination strategies, such as those for COVID-19. Despite broad agreement in the medical community about the safety and efficacy of available vaccines, a large number of social media users continue to be inundated with false information ...

Correlation between universal BCG vaccination policy and reduced morbidity and mortality for COVID-19: an epidemiological study

open access: yesmedRxiv, 2020
COVID-19 has spread to most countries in the world. Puzzlingly, the impact of the disease is different in different countries. These differences are attributed to differences in cultural norms, mitigation efforts, and health infrastructure.

Acacetin reduces endoplasmic reticulum stress through the P‐eNOS/PERK signaling pathway to attenuate MGO‐induced vascular endothelial cell dysfunction

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We investigated a potential protective effect of acacetin, a naturally occurring flavonoid, against methylglyoxal (MGO)‐induced endothelial dysfunction in human umbilical vein endothelial cells and its mechanism of action. Acacetin can could inhibit MGO‐induced intracellular calcium ion influx, enhance the expression levels of phosphorylated ...

Streptococcus pneumoniae Serotypes Carried by Young Children and Their Association With Acute Otitis Media During the Period 2016–2019

open access: yesFrontiers in Pediatrics, 2021
Background:Streptococcus pneumoniae (Sp) is a major cause of acute otitis media (AOM). Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) programs have altered pneumococcal serotype epidemiology in disease and carriage.

The Information Ecosystem of Online Groups with Anti- and Pro-vaccine Views on Facebook [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
Opposition and hesitancy to vaccination have been one of the major threats to global health. Social media sites have been suspected as a breeding ground of misleading narratives about vaccines, but little is known about how pervasive anti-vaccine views are on the world's largest social media, Facebook.

Cost-benefit analysis of foot and mouth disease control in Ethiopia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Foot and mouth disease (FMD) occurs endemically in Ethiopia. Quantitative insights on its national economic impact and on the costs and benefits of control options are, however, lacking to support decision making in its control.

Establishment and biological characterization of radioresistant colorectal cancer cell lines

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Under ionizing radiation exposure, radiation‐sensitive cancer cells exhibit oxidative stress and DNA damage, while radiation‐resistant cancer cells exhibit strong antioxidant properties and DNA damage repair. Radiotherapy resistance is a major cause of recurrence and metastasis in colorectal cancer (CRC).

Comparative analysis of viral RNA signatures on different RIG-I-like receptors

open access: yeseLife, 2016
The RIG-I-like receptors (RLRs) play a major role in sensing RNA virus infection to initiate and modulate antiviral immunity. They interact with particular viral RNAs, most of them being still unknown.
