The Plasmodium food vacuole is a sophisticated organelle optimized for hemoglobin metabolism. It is the site of acidification, hemoglobin proteolysis, peptide transport, heme polymerization, detoxification of oxygen radicals, and quinoline action. A number of proteins that function in the food vacuole are known.
