Reactive flow simulation of vacuum carburizing by acetylene gas

Computers and Fluids, 2013
Abstract Vacuum carburizing is a method to strengthen the surface of low quality metals. Metal like raw steel is carburized by reactive gas (e.g. acetylene or propane) at low pressure (below the atmospheric pressure) and high temperature (above 1000 K) in a furnace. Carburized metal is roughly 1.5 times harder than raw metal.

A numerical model for vacuum carburization of an automotive gear ring

Metals and Materials International, 2011
A vacuum carburizing-heat treatment of an annulus gear ring is simulated via a carburized predictive finite element model that accounts for both heat transfer and carbon diffusion. Profiles of carbon concentration along the depth of the gear ring were calculated and are congruent with measured values, which were obtained by a glow discharge ...

Heat Transfer Analysis in the Vacuum Carburizing Furnace

Transactions of the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers B, 2003
The main objective of the present study is to analyze the heat transfer characteristics in the vacuum carburizing furnace. Local temperatures are measured at different locations in the self-fabricated furnace for various operating conditions using K-type thermocouples.

Nomograms to Determine the Controlling Factors in Vacuum-Carburizing Regimes

Metal Science and Heat Treatment, 2016
A method based on computer evaluation of mechanical properties and a mathematical model of vacuum carburizing are used for creating two nomograms, i.e., (1 ) for determining the parameters that the carburized layers of gears of steel 16Kh3NVFMB-Sh must have to obtain the required service properties and (2 ) for determining the values that the factors ...
