The history of the vacuum pump
Vacuum, 1959Abstract The first man to make a vacuum pump was Guericke, somewhere about 1654. It was a crude pump, with joints kept airtight by water immersion. Soon after Boyle produced a much improved piston pump, made by Robert Hooke. About the same time the Accademia del Cimento used the vacuos space in the enlarged head of a mercury barometer to carry out ...

Last week Daedalus invented a new electromagnetic pump. He now intends to run this motor in a vacuum. By dumping energy into the vacuum, the pump would allow ‘virtual’ particles in the vicinity to become real, and would pour out particles of amazingly low energy. A new field of physics awaits development.

A pump was constructed in a casing 10 cm in diam in which electrons are orbited around a central anode consisting of a tungsten rod supporting a titanium cylinder. Electrons have mean free paths of several hundred centimeters, they ionize inert gas and they heat the titanium cylinder to give sublimation.

In kinetic gas theory one considers a gas as a set of molecules that are locked up in a vessel (Figure 11.1). They are point masses that are all identical. The gas molecules move in all directions, across each other, at all possible velocities.

The centripetal-pump effect in a vacuum pump
Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series A. Mathematical and Physical Sciences, 1958Abstract An instrument is described which works as a centripetal vacuum pump. It consists of two circular metal plates, one stationary, the other rotating opposite it. The stator has an opening in the centre. The rotor can be freely displaced along the axis of rotation.
