Performance assessment of a potential underground thermal storage facility: Case study of the closed mine Prosper‐Haniel in the Ruhr coal mining area in Germany

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates the feasibility of an underground closed‐loop thermal storage facility at a post‐mining site, intended for seasonal heat energy storage. Its principal design shows water flow directions in winter and summer (1, 2), heat pumps (3), an upper water reservoir (4), and connecting pipes (5).

Surface Modification of Si Field Emitter Arrays for Vacuum Sealing

open access: yes, 2000
Vacuum packaging is a very important issue for vacuum microelectronics devices, especially for field emission displays. Emission current from the field emitter array (FEA), however, is known to decrease significantly after the vacuum packaging process ...

Mitigating surcharge‐induced column‐head cracking in double‐deck shield tunnels using hyperelastic bearing joints

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
A staged three‐dimensional nonlinear soil–structure interaction (SSI) model is established, in which the initial geostress state, tunnel excavation, lining installation, delayed activation of the internal frame, and subsequent surcharge loading are simulated sequentially.

The Influence of Vacuum Level on the Friction Force Acting on the Pneumatic Cylinder Sealing Ring [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Presented in this paper are the results of measurement of friction force acting on the pneumatic cylinder sealing rings under high vacuum atmosphere. The investigations were conducted at relatively low levels of sliding speed of the sealing ring. Special

Anatomy of a SPAN Particle: A Four‐Level Structural Framework for Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

open access: yesEcoEnergy, EarlyView.
Sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) is a key cathode material for batteries. Borrowing the four‐level classification of protein structure, this perspective demonstrates SPAN's structural complexity into well‐defined levels, giving researchers clear research boundaries and targets at each level for improving battery performance.

DVIA technique for acute periprosthetic joint infection: a surgical technique and case series

open access: yesArthroplasty
Aims Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) remains a major challenge in orthopaedic surgery. While debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention (DAIR) are a common treatment for acute PJI, its success rate is variable.

Studies on the Nutritional, Functional, Textural, and Sensory Characteristics of Finger and Barnyard Millet‐Incorporated Nuggets

open access: yesFood Chemistry International, EarlyView.
The graphic illustrates the development of nuggets traditionally known as “wari” prepared with whole green grams and composite flour barnyard millet var. (PRJ‐1) and finger millet var. (VL‐M‐380) in a 1:1 ratio. The addition of millet significantly improved the nutritional value of nuggets, providing higher levels of protein, carbohydrates, fiber ...

Effects of Crop Rotation and Hydrogel Application on Soil Biological Properties and Wheat Biomass Production in Drylands

open access: yesJournal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background and aim Conservation agriculture (CA) is rapidly gaining traction to promote sustainable crop production, focusing on minimum soil disturbance, permanent soil cover, and strategic crop rotation. Moreover, hydrogel is increasingly being used to improve water retention, including in combination with CA, particularly in water limited ...
