We previously stated an impossibility result and suggested that the standard approaches to vagueness were incapable of providing a satisfactory response to the result. This chapter considers how a more satisfactory response to the result might proceed. This will call for a radical revision in our general understanding of vagueness and in how its logic ...

Summary: Various elementary properties of vague rings are obtained. Furthermore, the concepts of vague subring, vague ideal, vague prime ideal and vague maximal ideal are introduced, and the validity of some relevant classical results in these settings is investigated.

Vagueness, Rationality And Undecidability: A Theory Of Why There Is Vagueness
Synthese, 1999A theory is put forward which explains vagueness of natural language predicates as a result of the fact that we are computationally bound. It is argued that for a Church-bound agent avoiding vagueness involves greater costs than accepting it. The relationship between vagueness and undecidability is explored.

VAGUE PARTS AND VAGUE IDENTITY
Pacific Philosophical Quarterly, 2009AbstractWe discuss arguments against the thesis that the world itself can be vague. The first section of the paper distinguishes dialectically effective from ineffective arguments against metaphysical vagueness. The second section constructs an argument against metaphysical vagueness that promises to be of the dialectically effective sort: an argument ...

When It Is Vague What Is Vague: Identifying Vagueness
2019What exactly should count as a vague term? The strikingly diverse examples of what is assumed to be vague in the literature reveal that this is, to a large extent, still unclear. It will be argued that this unclarity is a result of the prevalent borderline definition of vagueness. This definition is certainly pictorial but, in most of its formulations,

Summary: A vague set is a set of objects, each of which has a grade of membership whose value is a continuous subinterval of \([0,1]\). Such a set is characterized by a truth-membership function and a false-membership function. The notions of inclusion, union, intersection, and complement are extended to such sets, and various properties of vague sets ...

Moral Vagueness Is Ontic Vagueness
Ethics, 2016The aim of this essay is to argue that, if a robust form of moral realism is true, then moral vagueness is ontic vagueness. The argument is by elimination: I show that neither semantic nor epistemic approaches to moral vagueness are satisfactory.

Hypergraphs are among the most ubiquitous models of both natural and human-made structures. They can be used to model system architectures and data structures, and to represent a partition, covering and clustering in the area of circuit design. In this paper, we introduce the notions of vague hypergraphs and dual vague hypergraphs and present some of ...
