Without getting under your skin: non-invasive stimulation activates the vagus nerve

open access: yesFrontiers in Neuroscience
Cervical non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation (nVNS) has emerged as a practical neuromodulation approach with FDA-cleared indications in primary headache disorders, yet skepticism persists over whether transcutaneous stimulation can reliably engage vagal

Investigating the Effects of Brainstem Neuronal Adaptation on Cardiovascular Homeostasis

open access: yesFrontiers in Neuroscience, 2020
Central coordination of cardiovascular function is accomplished, in part, by the baroreceptor reflex, a multi-input multi-output physiological control system that regulates the activity of the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems via ...

Protein Kinase C-Dependent Effects of Neurosteroids on Synaptic GABAA Receptor Inhibition Require the δ-Subunit

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2021
The dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMV) contains preganglionic motor neurons important for interpreting sensory input from the periphery, integrating that information, and coding the appropriate parasympathetic (vagal) output to target organs ...

Emotion recognition in chronic treatment-resistant depression : before and after neurosurgical treatment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The neuroanatomical structures underlying Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) are not fully understood. Invasive treatment options now exist that target the brain structures associated with MDD.

Patterns on data described by vague limits, vague colimits and vague commutativity

open access: yesCoRR, 2016
The development of machine learning in particular and artificial intelligent in general has been strongly conditioned by the lack of an appropriated framework to specify and integrate learning processes, data transformation processes and data models. In this work we extend traditional algebraic specification methods to this type of framework.

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation improves dysautonomia, post-traumatic stress disorder and cognitive impairment in long covid patients: a pilot study

open access: yesScientific Reports
Long COVID is frequently associated with persistent autonomic dysfunction, cognitive impairment, and psychological distress, reflecting sustained neuroimmune and autonomic dysregulation. Effective disease-modifying therapies remain scarce.

Heart Rate Variability in the Perinatal Period: A Critical and Conceptual Review

open access: yesFrontiers in Neuroscience, 2020
Neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) greatly expand the use of technology. There is a need to accurately diagnose discomfort, pain, and complications, such as sepsis, mainly before they occur.

Metastasis on pause: How dormant tumor cells stay hidden within the tumor microenvironment and evade immune surveillance

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Dormant cancer cells can hide in distant organs for years, evading treatment and the immune system. This review highlights how signals from the surrounding tissue and immune environment keep these cells inactive or trigger their reawakening. Understanding these mechanisms may help develop therapies to eliminate or control dormant cells and prevent ...

Complications after medullary thyroid carcinoma surgery: multicentre study of the SQRTPA and EUROCRINE® databases

open access: yesBJS (British Journal of Surgery), EarlyView., 2020
This study investigated postoperative complications after surgery for medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) in Europe. Hypoparathyroidism, recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy and bleeding requiring reoperation occurred in 170 (26·2 per cent), 62 (13·7 per cent) and 17 (2·6 per cent) patients respectively.
