Art, artifice, and eroticized infantilization: Imagining Japanese femininities in the Weimar Republic in Fritz Lang's Harakiri (1919) and Kapitän Mertens's “Kio, die lasterhafte Kirschblüte” (1924)

open access: yesThe German Quarterly, Volume 96, Issue 3, Page 326-343, Summer 2023., 2023
Abstract This article focuses on the ways in which a Japan‐specific Orientalism regarding Japanese femininities establishes itself in Weimar Germany's popular culture. In this period of German democratization in which we observe Weimar women's social, sexual, and political liberation, I propose that popular culture texts such as Fritz Lang's film ...

A highly polymorphic effector protein promotes fungal virulence through suppression of plant‐associated Actinobacteria

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 237, Issue 3, Page 944-958, February 2023., 2023
Summary Plant pathogens secrete effector proteins to support host colonization through a wide range of molecular mechanisms, while plant immune systems evolved receptors to recognize effectors or their activities to mount immune responses to halt pathogens. Importantly, plants do not act as single organisms, but rather as holobionts that actively shape

Attentional control in middle childhood is highly dynamic—Strong initial distraction is followed by advanced attention control

open access: yesDevelopmental Science, Volume 25, Issue 6, November 2022., 2022
Pooling data from three auditory‐visual oddball studies, we found that attention control matures continuously during middle childhood. Distraction effects decline considerably during the experimental session in children aged 6–10 years. This effect has not been observed in early childhood and adults.

Neurophysiological correlates of collective perceptual decision‐making

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Neuroscience, Volume 51, Issue 7, Page 1676-1696, April 2020., 2020
Significant differences in frontal and parietal event‐related slow evoked potentials were found in EEG measures directly after a joint response resulting from an exchange of choice and confidence information between two partners. This evidence for differential representations of correctness and conflict suggests a social influence based on information ...

Getting to the Heart of Low Sensitivity to Alcohol: Context Moderates Low Cardiovascular Response to Alcohol in Persons With a Family History of Alcohol Use Disorder

open access: yesAlcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, Volume 44, Issue 3, Page 589-599, March 2020., 2020
This study showed that physiological sensitivity to acute alcohol varied within a drinking episode depending on the environment, as did placebo response. Especially in the context of negative emotional and alcohol‐related cues, young adults with a family history of alcoholism, compared to those without, exhibited a low level of cardiovascular response ...
