Successes and challenges of operating the Van Allen Probes mission in the radiation belts
2015 IEEE Aerospace Conference, 2015The Van Allen probes team has been successful in monitoring and trending the performance of the mission to date. However, operating two spacecraft in the Van Allen radiation belts poses a number of challenges and requires careful monitoring of spacecraft performance due to the high radiation environment and potential impact on the mostly single string ...

Conjugate studies of whistler-mode waves in the Van Allen radiation belts
2011 XXXth URSI General Assembly and Scientific Symposium, 2011Whistler-mode waves, especially chorus, can influence energetic electrons in the Van Allen radiation belts. These electromagnetic waves propagate over long distances in the magnetosphere. It has been previously shown that chorus can propagate from its equatorial source down to the subauroral ionosphere.

Autonomous Identification of the Morphology of Chorus Elements in The Van Allen Radiation Belts
2020We will present signal processing techniques based on shape analysis of the time-frequency signatures of chorus elements in the Van Allen Radiation Belts.

How Coherent are Flux Variations in the Outer Van Allen Radiation Belt?
2020<p>The electron population inside Earth&#8217;s outer radiation belt is highly variable and typically linked to geomagnetic activity such as storms and substorms. These variations can differ with radial distance, such that the fluxes at the outer boundary are different from those in the heart of the belt.

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1962
The time variations of intensity in the ‘horn’ of the outer Van Allen radiation belt as measured by the omnidirectional GM counter 302 in Explorer 7 were investigated for the period October 1959 to December 1960. A consistent empirical relationship between intensity and scalar magnetic field B was derived for different values of the magnetic shell ...

The Origin and Distribution of Energetic Electrons in the Van Allen Radiation Belts
1970The primary purpose of this paper is to present new results on the injection and distribution of the energetic electron component of the trapped radiation as a result of magnetic storms. The results described herein have been obtained with magnetic deflection electron spectrometers carried in the OGO 1 and OGO 3 satellites in elliptical orbits ...

Geomagnetic fluctuations and the form of the outer zone of the Van Allen radiation belt
Journal of Geophysical Research, 1960It is demonstrated by formal calculation that the large-scale geomagnetic fluctuations observed at ground stations result in a rapid and somewhat remarkable kind of diffusion of the electrons in the outer zone of the Van Allen radiation belt. An initial thin ring of electrons will give an immediate finite particle flux at infinity, at the same time ...

Mathematical Remarks on the Van Allen Radiation Belt: A Survey of Old and New Results
SIAM Review, 1981In this paper we present the new and important results obtained for the Stormer problem in the past decade, together with their implications for the existence of the Van Allen radiation belt. Specifically, we prove the existence of quasi-periodic solutions for both small and large values of energy, and we give a complete topological description of all ...
