Dynamical importance of van der Waals saddle and excited potential surface in C(1D)+D2 complex-forming reaction

open access: yesNature Communications, 2017
It is commonly held that van der Waals wells are inevitable in chemical reactions. Here, the authors show that weak van der Waals forces in the entrance channel of a prototypical complex-forming reaction cause a van der Waals saddle instead, with ...

Near-field Electrodynamics of Atomically Doped Carbon Nanotubes

open access: yes, 2005
We develop a quantum theory of near-field electrodynamical properties of carbon nanotubes and investigate spontaneous decay dynamics of excited states and van der Waals attraction of the ground state of an atomic system close to a single-wall nanotube ...

Efimov states near a Feshbach resonance and the limits of van der Waals universality at finite background scattering length

open access: yes, 2018
We calculate the spectrum of three-body Efimov bound states near a Feshbach resonance within a model which accounts both for the finite range of interactions and the presence of background scattering.

Inactivating SARS‐CoV‐2 Virus with MOF‐Composites as Smart Face Masks

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In situ preparation and functionalization of MOF@Cotton fabrics as smart face masks for the immobilization of proteins and inactivation viruses, such as SARS‐CoV‐2. Abstract The significant impact of the SARS‐CoV‐2 (COVID‐19) pandemic outbreak on people's lives has highlighted the urgent need for effective personal protective equipment.

From bad metal to Kondo insulator: temperature evolution of the optical properties of SmB6

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2016
The recent rekindling of interest in the mixed valent Kondo insulator SmB _6 as candidate for a first correlated topological insulator has resulted in a wealth of new experimental observations. In particular, angle-resolved photoemission experiments have

Van der Waals interactions across stratified media

open access: yes, 2003
Working at the Lifshitz level, we investigate the van der Waals interactions across a series of layers with a periodic motif. We derive the complete form of the van der Waals interaction as an explicit function of the number of periodic layers.

Geckos, ceilings and van der Waals

open access: yesChimia, 2018
The ability of a gecko to run rapidly across ceilings and up and down vertical walls is a striking example of the application of van der Waals interactions.

MOFs and COFs in Electronics: Bridging the Gap between Intrinsic Properties and Measured Performance

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) hold promise for advanced electronics. However, discrepancies in reported electrical conductivities highlight the importance of measurement methodologies. This review explores intrinsic charge transport mechanisms and extrinsic factors influencing performance, and critically ...

DNA‐Templated 2D Heterostructures as Phototriggered Dynamic Nanohybrids: From Releasing Molecular Loads to Controlling Enzyme Biocatalytic Function

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
DNA strands are employed both as dynamic linkers and nanoscale templates for the integration of Ag2S nanoparticles on MoS2, which in turn imparted photothermal responsiveness; this feature permits the selective cargo (fluorophore, quantum dots or an enzyme) release from the MoS2 surface in response to local heat induced by light irradiation.
