“Anytime, Anywhere”: Online Language Tutoring Platforms and the Rise of the (Im)Mobile Language Teacher

open access: yesTESOL Quarterly, EarlyView.
Abstract This article examines how online tutoring platforms (OTPs) have facilitated new forms of (im)mobility—and discourses of (im)mobility—among online English tutors. Drawing on semi‐structured interviews with online tutors, the article critically interrogates OTPs' primary selling point: that online tutors can work “anytime, anywhere.” While OTPs ...

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, EarlyView.
Anthropologists have long shown that asking for food in times of need is morally valued in rural Namibia. Yet among the Damara pastoralists with whom I work, people now increasingly describe feeling shame (taob) when they ask for food. In this article, I trace this shift to the affective dynamics of social class formation.

Using a proprietary government database, we identify Italian firms with alleged ties to the Mafia through their executives, directors, or shareholders.

Is the rent too high? Land ownership and monopoly power

open access: yesReal Estate Economics, EarlyView.
Abstract Pricing power in real estate markets can reduce housing supply and redevelopment relative to the social optimum. We show how pricing power interacts with popular redevelopment subsidies and zoning regulations. Using building‐level rental income data from NYC, we find that increased concentration is correlated with increased rents.
