Monitoring Quality of Mafia‐Connected Accountants
Journal of Accounting Research, EarlyView.ABSTRACT We investigate the monitoring quality of accountants with ties to the Mafia in their role as auditors for “clean” firms—those with no known ties to organized crime. Using a proprietary government database, we identify Italian firms with alleged ties to the Mafia through their executives, directors, or shareholders.

Is the rent too high? Land ownership and monopoly power
Real Estate Economics, EarlyView.Abstract Pricing power in real estate markets can reduce housing supply and redevelopment relative to the social optimum. We show how pricing power interacts with popular redevelopment subsidies and zoning regulations. Using building‐level rental income data from NYC, we find that increased concentration is correlated with increased rents.

The RAND Journal of Economics, EarlyView.ABSTRACT We study how insurer competition affects premiums for fully‐insured plans in the employer‐sponsored health insurance market. By utilizing quasi‐experimental variations induced by mergers among national insurers, we show that increased insurer concentration leads to higher premiums, but there exists substantial heterogeneity.

Archaeometry, EarlyView.ABSTRACT This study shows an innovative approach to determine the origin of some Calabrian rocks quarried used in ancient times. Twenty‐five quarries, distributed in all the Calabrian provinces (Southern Italy), were studied and sampled. Ten samples were taken from each quarry, for a total of 250 samples.
