Assessing spatial variability and efficacy of surrogate species at an ecosystem scale. [PDF]

open access: yesConserv Biol
Abstract Preserving biodiversity is a central goal of conservation, but, in practice, monitoring biodiversity often involves assessing population trends for one or a handful of species that are presumed proxies for biodiversity. Despite the popularity of surrogate species strategies, the links between biodiversity and surrogate species are rarely ...

Effects of land cover and protected areas on flying insect diversity. [PDF]

open access: yesConserv Biol
Abstract Widespread insect losses are a critical global problem. Mitigating this problem requires identifying the principal drivers across different taxa and determining which insects are covered by protected areas. However, doing so is hindered by missing information on most species owing to extremely high insect diversity and difficulties in ...

Effects of seagrass restoration on coastal fish abundance and diversity

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 37, Issue 6, December 2023., 2023
Abstract Restoration is accelerating to reverse global declines of key habitats and recover lost ecosystem functions, particularly in coastal ecosystems. However, there is high uncertainty about the long‐term capacity of restored ecosystems to provide habitat and increase biodiversity and the degree to which these ecosystem services are mediated by ...

Fragmentation effects on an endangered species across a gradient from the interior to edge of its range

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 37, Issue 5, October 2023., 2023
Abstract Understanding how habitat fragmentation affects individual species is complicated by challenges associated with quantifying species‐specific habitat and spatial variability in fragmentation effects within a species’ range. We aggregated a 29‐year breeding survey data set for the endangered marbled murrelet (Brachyramphus marmoratus) from >42 ...

Synthesis on the effectiveness of soil translocation for plant community restoration

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 60, Issue 4, Page 714-724, April 2023., 2023
Our analysis highlights soil translocation can be a successful restoration method across a broad range of ecosystems. However, its implementation needs to depend on a thorough evaluation of local conditions and the potential added value. Further refinement of soil translocation techniques is needed to increase success rates.

Long transient response of vegetation dynamics after four millennia of anthropogenic impacts in an island ecosystem

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 28, Issue 21, Page 6318-6332, November 2022., 2022
In the Mediterranean region, island ecosystem dynamics have been influenced by millennia of anthropogenic impacts. Here, we analysed the spatio‐temporal dynamics of vegetation in sa Dragonera, where herbivory by goats, over‐logging and rat occurrence ended in the last decades.

Patterns and controls on island‐wide aboveground biomass accumulation in second‐growth forests of Puerto Rico

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 54, Issue 5, Page 1146-1159, September 2022., 2022
Understanding the heterogeneity of biomass accumulation in second‐growth tropical forests following land use abandonment is important for informing ecosystem carbon models and forest restoration efforts. Using airborne lidar data, we quantify patterns and controls on aboveground biomass accumulation in second‐growth forests of Puerto Rico.
