Avoiding Overfitting in Variable-Order Markov Models: a Cross-Validation Approach [PDF]
Higher$\text{-}$order Markov chain models are widely used to represent agent transitions in dynamic systems, such as passengers in transport networks. They capture transitions in complex systems by considering not only the current state but also the path of previously visited states. For example, the likelihood of train passengers traveling from Paris (

This paper presents the results and conclusions found when predicting the behavior of gamers in commercial videogames datasets. In particular, it uses Variable-Order Markov (VOM) to build a probabilistic model that is able to use the historic behavior of

Variable order Markov modellingfor LEO mobile satellite channels
A finite state Markov channel (FSMC) model for a digital narrowband mobile LEO satellite channel is presented, which can be used to predict the time-varying behaviour of the channel and to adapt the transmission to the channel state. The model is developed with the help of the so-called context tree pruning (CTP) algorithm.

A Configurable Statistical Lossless Compression Core Based on Variable Order Markov Modeling and Arithmetic Coding [PDF]
This paper presents a practical realization in hardware of the concepts of variable order Markov modeling using multisymbol alphabets and arithmetic coding for lossless compression of universal data. This type of statistical coding algorithm has long been regarded as being able to deliver very high compression ratios close to the information content of

Bayesian analysis of variable-order, reversible Markov chains [PDF]
We define a conjugate prior for the reversible Markov chain of order $r$. The prior arises from a partially exchangeable reinforced random walk, in the same way that the Beta distribution arises from the exchangeable Poly\'{a} urn.

Predictive Channel Access in Cognitive Radio Networks Based on Variable Order Markov Models [PDF]
The concept of CR enables the unlicensed users to share the spectrum with licensed users, on the condition that the licensed users have preemptive priority. The use of the channel by unlicensed users should not result in more than acceptable interference level to the licensed users, if interference occurs.

Bayesian variable order Markov models: Towards Bayesian predictive state representations
We present a Bayesian variable order Markov model that shares many similarities with predictive state representations. The resulting models are compact and much easier to specify and learn than classical predictive state representations. Moreover, we show that they significantly outperform a more straightforward Bayesian hierarchical Markov chain model
