A Novel Variable-order Markov Model for Clustering Categorical Sequences

open access: closedIEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, 2013
Clustering categorical sequences is an important and difficult data mining task. Despite recent efforts, the challenge remains, due to the lack of an inherently meaningful measure of pairwise similarity. In this paper, we propose a novel variable-order Markov framework, named weighted conditional probability distribution (WCPD), to model clusters of ...

Cell-related location area planning for 4G PCS networks with variable-order Markov model

open access: closedJournal of Systems and Software, 2013
Abstract Location management is a critical issue in personal communication service (PCS) networks, tracking the location of user equipment (UE) with the goal of minimizing total signaling cost. Previous work can be classified into two categories: static and dynamic. Static schemes partition networks into fixed size LAs.

Segmented Sequence Prediction Using Variable-Order Markov Model Ensemble

open access: closedIEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering
In recent years, sequence prediction, particularly in natural language processing tasks, has made significant progress due to advanced neural network architectures like Transformer and enhanced computing power. However, challenges persist in modeling and

Recognition of User Intentions for Interface Agents with Variable Order Markov Models

open access: closedUser Modeling, Adaptation, and Personalization, 2009
A key aspect to study in the field of interface agents is the need to detect as soon as possible the user intentions. User intentions have an important role for an interface agent because they serve as a context to define the way in which the agents can collaborate with users.

A Variable-Order Markov-Chain-Based Model for Rayleigh Fading and Rake Receiver

open access: closedIEEE Signal Processing Letters, 2004
The reliability of usual Markov chain models for Rayleigh fading depends strongly on the channel variation regime. In this letter, a flat Rayleigh fading channel and RAKE receiver output model for all fading variation speeds is proposed. The complex Gaussian fading and the RAKE output processes are bandlimited.

Markov Models of Queueing–Inventory Systems with Variable Order Size

open access: closedCybernetics and Systems Analysis, 2017
Markov models of queueing–inventory systems with variable order size are investigated. Two classes of models are considered: with instant service and with nonzero service time. The model with nonzero service time assumes that impatient customers can form a queue of either finite or infinite length.

Population Diversity Measures Based on Variable-Order Markov Models for the Traveling Salesman Problem

open access: closedParallel Problem Solving from Nature, 2016
This paper presents entropy-based population diversity measures that take into account dependencies between the variables in order to maintain genetic diversity in a GA for the traveling salesman problem. The first one is formulated as the entropy rate of a variable-order Markov process, where the probability of occurrence of each vertex is assumed to ...

CpG Island Identification with Higher Order and Variable Order Markov Models

open access: closed, 2008
Identifying the location and function of human genes in a long sequence of genome is difficult due to lack of sufficient information about genes. Experimental evidence has suggested that there exists strong correlation between CpG islands and genes immediately following them.

How to Think Like a Data Scientist: Application of a Variable Order Markov Model to Indicators Management

open access: closed, 2015
The growing demand for specialists in analyzing large volumes of data has led to an emerging profile of knowledge managers known as data scientists. How to address the different and complex scenarios with mathematical methods makes a difference when to apply them successfully in a dynamic environment such as the management indicators.
