Fracture of Concrete under Variable Amplitude Fatigue Loading

The fracture response of concrete under low-cycle variable amplitude loading at frequencies up to 10 Hz was investigated. The applied loading history, selected to reflect earthquake loads on concrete dams, consisted of a basic sinusoidal oscillation interrupted by occasional spikes.

Stochastic fatigue damage modeling under variable amplitude loading

Crack-tip stress distributions under variable amplitude loading

It is associated with the influence of near-tip stress on instantaneous resistance of crack tip surface layers to failure under atmospheric conditions. Fatigue crack propagation under variable-amplitude loading

A finite-element analysis has been performed to investigate quantitatively the level at which fatigue crack surfaces come into contact during fatigue cycles. The results agreed well with experimental observations and suggest that quantitative design rules may be developed, based upon the crack-closure hypothesis.

It is found and clarified in this paper that the classical random fatigue strength derived from P-S-N curves is only valid under constant amplitude loading, and as a result, the classical fatigue reliability stress-strength interference model based on such kind of random fatigue strength is also valid under constant amplitude loading only.
