Design of a Parallel Kalman Filter with Variable Forgetting Factors
1988 American Control Conference, 1988One of the historical limitations to wide-spread use of discrete sequential estimation techniques has been an unavoidable trade-off between filter speed of response and filter accuracy. Filters which respond to process changes within a few iterations also demonstrate a high level of sensitivity to process noise and measurement noise.

Variable forgetting factor RLS adaptive equalizer for DS-CDMA system
2011 IEEE Symposium on Computers & Informatics, 2011In this paper, a variable forgetting factor RLS adaptive equalizer is proposed for direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) communication system. We consider an adaptive Laguerre lattice equalizer which applies an optimal method based on the variable step-size least mean square (VSLMS) algorithm for adaptable forgetting factor RLS ...

Variable Forgetting Factor-Based Friction Compensation Method of Precision Stages
2006 SICE-ICASE International Joint Conference, 2006This paper presents the nonresonant ultrasonic motor (SPIDER)-driven precision stage control based on an adaptive identification method with a variable forgetting factor (VFF). SPIDER-driven stage has a strong non-linearity due to the frictional drive mechanism. Focusing on the VFF, dynamical change of frictional property is detected.

Time-frequency analysis using AR models with variable forgetting factors
International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, 2002A method for estimating time-frequency representations of nonstationary signals using recursive least squares (RLS) with variable forgetting factors is described. The variable forgetting factor is adapted to a nonstationary signal by an extended prediction error criterion which accounts for the nonstationarity of the signal.

Deterministic Convergence of an Adaptive Regulator with Variable Forgetting Factor
IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 1982Abstract An adaptive regulator with variable weighting of past data is developed. A forgetting factor is at each step chosen such that a scalar measure of the information content is kept constant. During steady state operation of near deterministic systems the forgetting factor remains close to unity and the information content of the estimator is ...

Comments on: ‘Implementation of self-tuning regulators with variable forgetting factors’
Automatica, 1983The similarities are pointed out between the variable forgetting factor given in the paper by Fortescue, Kershenbaum and Ydstie and that given in Wellstead and Sanoff. Moreover, it is shown that the method of Fortescue, Kershenbaum and Ydstie can be made significantly more efficient, computationally, than is indicated.

Variable forgetting factor identification algorithm for fault diagnosis of wind turbines
2016 Chinese Control and Decision Conference (CCDC), 2016To diagnose the fault in the pitch actuator of wind turbines, a fault diagnosis method is proposed in this paper, which is based on the variable forgetting factor recursive least-squares(VFF-RLS) algorithm. According to the characteristic that the system parameters are changed by faults, the VFF-RLS system identification algorithm is adopted to ...

Finite Impulse Response Adaptive Filters with Variable Forgetting Factor
2013The statistical properties of the input and the reference signal determine the environment of an adaptive filter. Although most of the analyses of adaptive filters in available literature are based on a stationary environment, the utilization of adaptive filters shows its advantages primarily in nonstationary environments.

On the performance of variable forgetting factor recursive least-squares algorithms
SPIE Proceedings, 2016The recursive least-squares (RLS) is a very popular adaptive algorithm, which is widely used in many system identification problems. The parameter that crucially influences the performance of the RLS algorithm is the forgetting factor. The value of this parameter leads to a compromise between tracking, misadjustment, and stability.

Product identification in industrial batch fermentation using a variable forgetting factor
Control Engineering Practice, 2011Abstract For reliable operation and the optimization of production, industrial fermentation processes require appropriate tools for monitoring the process in real time. This work presents the structure and operation of a soft sensor for the on-line monitoring of biomass and product concentration during salinomycin and bacitracin fermentation in an ...
