Variable Speed Drives Evaluation Test
IEEE Industry Applications Magazine, 1998Testing of variable speed drives is not yet subject to standards, although motor drives with the same general design may differ significantly in performance. Tests of efficiency, harmonic content, immunity to voltage sags and capacitor switching are developed and applied to a collection of 3 hp and 20 hp 480 V drives.

Variable-speed drive constant-frequency alternator
Electrical Engineering, 1950ACLUTCH-DRIVEN alternator, which will maintain its output frequency constant within one per cent although the driving speed varies more than 80 per cent, has been developed at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory. The 200-watt alternator is used in ordnance equipment wherein adequate mechanical power is available, but not at a constant speed.

Variable-speed drives - the future
Power Engineering Journal, 1994Most variable-speed-drive (VSD) development is directed towards AC drives and it is likely that, for the foreseeable future, the rectifier-inverter and induction motor combination will dominate the market. This article looks at current technologies and future trends in VSDs including packaging, power semiconductor devices, silicon management, control ...

Efficient driving at variable speeds
World Pumps, 2013Circulation pumps are widely used in HVAC systems but are heavy consumers of electricity. Here, M. Karaca and M. Aydin consider strategies to optimize the energy use in a closed-loop system of parallel, variable-speed circulation pumps, and demonstrate the potential of the speed ratio to provide large energy savings.

Variable speed drives for roller presses
1997 IEEE/PCA Cement Industry Technical Conference. XXXIX Conference Record (Cat. No.97CH36076), 2002The concept of an energy efficient integral grinding system incorporating a roller press is best served with variable speed drives. This drive system is required to accommodate grinding of different types of cement with different fineness. It eases the load on the mechanical components and is an economically feasible drive providing a return of ...

Power quality surrounding Variable Speed Drives
IEEE Power and Energy Society Conference and Exposition in Africa: Intelligent Grid Integration of Renewable Energy Resources (PowerAfrica), 2012Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) cause power quality problems, one of the major generators of harmonics within power systems. The growing popularity of VSDs as a key driver of energy efficiency, requires more effective means to mitigate harmonics. This paper presents research surrounding harmonics and various ways to mitigate harmonics.

Not just speed control [variable speed AC drives]
IEEE-IAS/PCA 2004 Cement Industry Technical Conference (IEEE Cat. No04CH37518), 2004Today, the use of variable speed A.C. drives in the cement industry is well established. The development of power semiconductors, microprocessors and memory circuits, together with the latest motor speed and torque control methods like the DTC (Direct Torque Control), enables creating more functionality inside variable speed drives.

Brushless DC drive (an advanced variable speed drive)
Proceedings of International Conference on Power Electronics, Drives and Energy Systems for Industrial Growth, 2002The brushless DC motor and control overcomes all the problems being faced in conventional DC motor/thyristor drives and the AC V/F controlled induction motor to provide smooth and efficient power and speed control which is not measured in percent of RPM, but in physical shaft position within a single revolution.
