Forest bird diversity increases with fragmentation per se in landscapes following forest gains

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 1, January 2026.
Our results suggest that, at least for forest breeding birds, the benefits of habitat restoration to increase total forest area could be enhanced by distributing a given amount of restored habitat across multiple patches. Our study also highlights the overarching importance of habitat amount for biodiversity conservation. Taken together, these findings

Yasuní - a hotspot for jaguars Panthera onca (Carnivora: Felidae)? Camera-traps and jaguar activity at Tiputini Biodiversity Station, Ecuador

open access: yesRevista de Biología Tropical, 2014
Jaguars (Panthera onca) are the largest predator in lowland forests of Amazonia but there have been few studies on their occurrence and activity in such forests. Here, we used camera traps to document the occurrence and activity of jaguars within a local

Recovering European River Invertebrate Communities Homogenize or Differentiate Depending on Anthropogenic Stress

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 32, Issue 1, January 2026.
(a) European river invertebrate communities showed an average increase in local richness over time (1994–2023), indicating partial local recovery following the alleviation of anthropogenic stress (e.g., point‐source pollution). However, this local recovery was not accompanied by increases in β‐diversity, likely due to persistent, unaddressed stressors,

Variación espacial y temporal de las características fisicoquímicas del agua y sedimento en la laguna costera Yalahau, Quintana Roo

open access: yes, 2016
In the Yalahau coastal lagoon, Quintana Roo, we analyzed spatial (Outer, Sea-lagoon, South, and North zones) and temporal weather-season variations (rainy, nortes, and dry), in physicochemical characteristics of water and sediment.

Finding floral and faunal species richness optima among active fire regimes

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 39, Issue 6, December 2025.
Abstract Changing fire regimes have important implications for biodiversity and challenge traditional conservation approaches that rely on historical conditions as proxies for ecological integrity. This historical‐centric approach becomes increasingly tenuous under climate change, necessitating direct tests of environmental impacts on biodiversity.

Patrones de variación espacial y temporal de los macroinvertebrados acuáticos en la Laguna de Tecocomulco, Hidalgo (México)

open access: yes, 2014
Spatial and temporal variation patterns in aquatic macroinvertebrates of Tecocomulco Lake, Hidalgo (Mexico). Lake Tecocomulco, Hidalgo, is a relic of the ancient lakes of Anahuac, important for the con- servation of resident and migratory birds. However,

Influence of sex‐organ positions on pollen transfer and self‐interference in plants with stylar polymorphisms: An experimental approach using three‐dimensional printed flowers

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 9, Page 2526-2538, September 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Heterostylous plants are defined by the reciprocal positioning of stigmas and anthers in floral morphs—a trait proposed by Darwin to enhance the efficiency of disassortative (intermorph) pollen transfer.
