Estimation Error in the Correlation of Two Random Variables: A Spreadsheet-Based Exposition

open access: yesSpreadsheets in Education, 2009
Although the statistical term correlation is well-known across many academic disciplines, estimation error in the correlation has traditionally been considered to be a topic too difficult for students outside statistical fields.

Promiscuous stimulation of HSP70 ATPase activity by parasite‐derived J‐domains

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum exports three highly homologous yet functionally divergent J‐domain proteins into human erythrocytes. Here, we show that J‐domains isolated from all three proteins effectively stimulate the ATPase activity of both endogenous host and exported parasite HSP70 chaperones.

Design and real time implementation of nonlinear minimum variance filter

open access: yes, 2008
In this paper, the design and real time implementation of a Nonlinear Minimum Variance (NMV) estimator is presented using a laboratory based ball and beam system. The real time implementation employs a LabVIEW based tool. The novelty of this work lies in

Applicability of mitotic figure counting by deep learning: a development and pan‐cancer validation study

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In this study, we developed a deep learning method for mitotic figure counting in H&E‐stained whole‐slide images and evaluated its prognostic impact in 13 external validation cohorts from seven different cancer types. Patients with more mitotic figures per mm2 had significantly worse patient outcome in all the studied cancer types except colorectal ...

Variance Reduction with Model-based Counterfactual Estimation

open access: yes
Variance reduction is an important area of research in the realm of online controlled experiments, also known as A/B tests. Reducing outcome variability in an A/B test improves the test’s statistical power and improves the efficiency of the ...

Chameleon sequences reveal structural effects in proteins representing micelle‐like distribution of hydrophobicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amino acids sequence of two different proteins with the same sequence (chameleon sequence—black boxes) represent in 3D structure of the proteins different secondary structures: HHHH—helical and BBB—Beta‐structural. The chains folded in water environment adopt different III‐order structures in which the chameleon fragments appear to adopt similar status

Estimation Risk, Market Efficiency, and the Predictability of Returns [PDF]

open access: yes
In asset pricing, estimation risk refers to investor uncertainty about the parameters of the return or cashflow process. We show that with estimation risk the observable properties of prices and returns can differ significantly from the properties ...
