A variational formulation for the torsional problem of piezoelastic beams [PDF]

open access: yesApplied Mathematical Modelling, 2012
In this paper a variational formulation is presented for the torsional deformation of homogeneous, linear piezoelectric monoclinic beams. All results of the paper are based on a generalization of the Saint-Venant’s theory of uniform torsion of elastic ...

Variations in model formulations

Annals of Operations Research, 1992
Mathematical programming models may contain a great deal of variations in their formulations. The same problem can be modeled as different formulations, or different problems can be modeled as the same formulations. In order to handle these variant formulations efficiently and intelligently, a model management system should be able to eliminate or ...

Variational formulation of sandpile dynamics

Physical Review E, 1996
Principle of stationary action was applied to derive a system of governing equations and boundary conditions describing dynamics of sandpile avalanches. The derived general system of equations for the sandpile dynamics is demonstrated to include equations of flow of granular material down a rigid wedge as a particular case.

On Variational Formulations in Nonlinear Magnetoelastostatics

Mathematics and Mechanics of Solids, 2008
Two new variational principles for nonlinear magnetoelastostatics are derived. Each is based on use of two independent variables: the deformation function and, in one case the scalar magnetostatic potential, in the other the magnetostatic vector potential.

Variational Formulation of the Theory

2021
In this chapter a variational formulation of the geometrically nonlinear continuum dislocation theory is developed based on the principle of virtual power [1]. Inserting special virtual motions, the balance equations of linear and angular momentum are derived.

Variational Formulation of Elastostatics

2013
In this chapter the variational characterizations of a solution to a boundary value problem of elastostatics are recalled. They include the principle of minimum potential energy, the principle of minimum complementary energy, the Hu-Washizu principle, and the compatibility related principle for a traction problem.

Differential Variational Formulations

1994
D’Alembert† brought the problems of motion under the umbrella of problems of equilibrium. Using Euler’s linear momentum law (1.1.2), we have that, when a point mass is acted upon by a set of forces resulting in F, it will acquire a linear momentum B, such that $$F = \dot B$$ (2.1.1) Consider now an increment of work done by the force F, as ...

Integral Variational Formulations

1994
D’Alembert’s principle and Gauss’ principle of least constraint are examples of differential variational formulations. These formulations make independent statements at each instant of time during the motion. By contrast integral variational formulations, which we shall examine in this chapter, make a single, all inclusive, statement.
