Affinity Proteomics‐Based Non‐Invasive Detection of Clinically Significant Liver Disease

open access: yesAlimentary Pharmacology &Therapeutics, Volume 64, Issue 1, Page 74-88, July 2026.
Using UK Biobank proteomic data, we identified a five‐protein score reflecting hepatic stellate cell activation and hepatocellular injury that predicts major adverse liver outcomes and clinically significant fibrosis, with consistent performance validated in two independent cohorts (patients with HIV and alpha1‐antitrypsin deficiency).

Effect of acute kidney injury on hospital-based outcomes in patients admitted for variceal hemorrhage. Analysis of national inpatient sample database.

open access: yes, 2023
INTRODUCTION: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is known to be a marker of mortality in patients with cirrhosis and variceal hemorrhage. AIM: To study the effect of AKI on hospital-based outcomes in patients with variceal hemorrhage.

Pre‐TIPS Liver and Spleen Volumetry Are Not Associated With Liver‐Related Outcomes After TIPS Placement for Refractory Ascites

open access: yesLiver International, Volume 46, Issue 7, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Background & Aims Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) improves survival in refractory ascites. A careful patient's selection is mandatory as TIPS can lead to complications. Liver volumetry is predictive of outcomes before hepatic surgery, but data on its role before TIPS placement are scarce. We aimed to evaluate whether liver

Randomized study comparing banding and propranolol to prevent initial variceal hemorrhage in cirrhotics with high-risk esophageal varices

open access: yes, 2005
Background & Aims: Standard care for prevention of first esophageal variceal hemorrhage is β-blockade, but this may be ineffective or unsafe. Our purpose was to compare endoscopic banding with propranolol for prevention of first variceal hemorrhage ...

Should Children with Esophageal Varices Receive Beta-Blockers for the Primary Prevention of Variceal Hemorrhage? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Esophageal variceal hemorrhage occurs in up to 10% of children with portal hypertension annually, and may be fatal. In contrast to the strong evidence in adults that nonselective beta-adrenergic antagonism reduces the risk of variceal bleeding by ...

Impact of Breath Holding on Spleen Stiffness Measured by 100 Hz Vibration Controlled Transient Elastography

open access: yesLiver International, Volume 46, Issue 7, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Backgrounds and Aims Ultrasound‐based spleen stiffness measurement (SSM) is a valid non‐invasive tool to assess portal hypertension (PH) in chronic liver disease. Whereas the role of the respiratory phase during liver stiffness measurements is established, no study has specifically addressed how respiration influences SSM by transient ...

Guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of extrahepatic portal vein obstruction (EHPVO) in children

open access: yesAnnals of Hepatology, 2013
Introduction. Extrahepatic portal vein obstruction is an important cause of portal hypertension among children. The etiology is heterogeneous and there are few evidences related to the optimal treatment. Aim and methods.

Novel Approaches to Reducing the Risk of Variceal Hemorrhage

open access: yes, 2017
Complications of advanced liver disease occur at the moment of clinical significant portal hypertension. Nitric oxide (NO) dysfunction and fibrosis play an important role in the pathophysiology of PH, but other mechanisms are also involved. Non-selective

The Effect of Weekend versus Weekday Admission on Outcomes of Esophageal Variceal Hemorrhage [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
BACKGROUND: Hospital staffing is often lower on weekends than weekdays, and may contribute to higher mortality in patients admitted on weekends. Because esophageal variceal hemorrhage (EVH) requires complex management and urgent endoscopic intervention ...

Burnt‐Out MASLD Predicts Outcomes After Curative Resection for Hepatocellular Carcinoma

open access: yesLiver International, Volume 46, Issue 7, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Background and Aims Hepatic steatosis often diminishes as metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) progresses, leading to a so‐called ‘burnt‐out’ state. Whether this phenotype simply reflects advanced liver injury or represents a biologically distinct condition with prognostic relevance after hepatocellular carcinoma ...
