Microbially induced sedimentary structures in fluvial settings: the gas domes from the Bolzano Megacaldera (Permian, Italy)

open access: yesSedimentology, Volume 73, Issue 4, Page 914-944, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Gas domes serve as some of the earliest and most persisting indicators of life on Earth, yet their documentation in continental environments remains sparse. This study aims to bridge this gap by examining gas domes within the Permian fluvial succession of Monte Luco, located in the caldera of the Bolzano Supervolcano. These structures occur as

Assessing the Helium Potential of Variscan Batholiths: Insight From Corsica Island

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems
Most of the current helium (He) reserves originate from fortuitous discoveries, mainly made during oil and gas exploration in sedimentary basins. As helium generation depends on U and Th α‐decay, old geological provinces gather key ingredients for high ...

Thermal evolution of a Variscan syn-orogenic intracontinental basin (Servoz basin, Western Alps): RSCM geothermometry and geochronology

open access: yesSwiss Journal of Geosciences, 2022
The Variscan basement of the Aiguilles-Rouges massif (Western Alps) exposes the Servoz syncline which consists of a metavolcano-sedimentary sequence composed of (i) a volcanic unit of unknown age and origin, (ii) Early Carboniferous sedimentary series ...

Anomalously Low 3He/4He and Elevated Heat Flow in the Northern Apennines Explained by Lithospheric Delamination: A Modeling Approach

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, Volume 27, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract The 3He/4He ratios measured in 12 CO2‐dominated gas seeps from the Tuscany‐Roman Volcanic Provinces in Italy range between 0.07 and ∼1.6 Ra. Helium and δ13CO2 isotope systematics indicate a dominant crustal source with a variable but significantly lower contribution from the mantle.

Microstructural Investigation of Variscan Late-Collisional Granitoids (Asinara Island, NW Sardinia, Italy): New Insights on the Relationship Between Regional Deformation and Magma Emplacement

open access: yesGeosciences
In the framework of the geological mapping of sheet “n. 425—Asinara Island” (NW Sardinia, Italy) of the Italian National Geological Mapping Project (CARG Project), three late- to post-collisional Variscan intrusive units are recognized: (i) Castellaccio ...

Unraveling the Mystery of Melt Migration in Migmatites: From Channeling Instability to Pattern Formation

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 131, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Melt migration in partially molten rocks is commonly described by porous flow models controlled by the hydro‐mechanical compaction length, which effectively explains melt extraction at mid‐ocean ridges. However, this framework cannot account for the paradoxical accumulation of small melt fractions into rhythmic leucosome–melanosome bands in ...

An Upper Devonian foredeep basin in the Southern Central Iberian Zone (Variscan Iberian Massif): Consequences for Variscan plate dynamics

open access: yes
New field research and revision of previous works in the Variscan Iberian Massif unravel the existence of an Upper Devonian foredeep basin in the southern Central Iberian Zone, close to the suture area with the Ossa-Morena Zone.

Post‐Eocene 90° CCW Rotation of Sardinia‐South Corsica: Paleomagnetic Evidence From Permian‐Cretaceous Sediments of Nurra (NW Sardinia)

open access: yesTectonics, Volume 45, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract The paleomagnetism of Miocene calc‐alkaline volcanics and sediments from Sardinia has firmly showed that the Corsica‐Sardinia microplate rotated 50°–60° counterclockwise (CCW) with respect to Europe between 21 and 15 Ma, during its drift from the Provencal margin. However, Permian to Eocene rocks from central‐south Sardinia revealed higher (up

Garnet–Clinopyroxene Double‐Layered Coronae in a Metagabbronorite From the High‐Grade Metamorphic Gföhl Unit, Moldanubian Zone

open access: yesJournal of Metamorphic Geology, Volume 44, Issue 4, Page 311-336, May 2026.
ABSTRACT This study investigates garnet–clinopyroxene double‐layered coronae in a metagabbronorite from the high‐grade metamorphic Gföhl Unit (Bohemian Massif). The coronae formed at the interfaces between relic magmatic orthopyroxene, still preserved in the cores of the coronae, and the plagioclase‐rich rock matrix.
