Long‐Term Storage of Meteoric Water in the Variscan Basement: Stable Isotope Constraints (δD–δ18O)
ABSTRACT F‐Ba‐Pb‐Zn (±Ag) deposits near the unconformity between the Armorican and Aquitaine basins formed by mixing surface waters and brines with fluid ascending from the basement. To better constrain the source of this fluid and the conditions of mixing, we analyzed the hydrogen (δDwater) and oxygen (δ18Owater) isotopic composition of water trapped ...

Previous studies have shown that microorganisms thrive in oligotrophic fracture systems, and metabolisms include consumption and production of methane. In the Laxemar, Götemar, and Forsmark areas of Sweden, ancient microbial activity has previously been ...

Dating C/S Structures in Syntectonic Granites by In Situ Rb‐Sr Analyses on Muscovite
ABSTRACT The interplay of crystallisation, deformation and fluid–rock interactions makes deciphering geochronological information complex in syntectonic granites. In this study, we apply in situ Rb‐Sr analyses to selected samples from the Questembert Variscan syntectonic granite in Western France, which was emplaced along the South Armorican Shear Zone

This study provides a new cartographic framework for a geologically complex region in the SW Iberian Massif (central-east Portugal). We have redefined lithological ensembles and clarified structural relationships between rock types (unconformities and ...

Abstract Petrological and seismic constraints suggest differential sampling depth for ultrahigh pressure (UHP) metamorphic rocks exposed in different segments of the fossil subduction zone of the Western Alps. However, the mechanisms for the observed differential exhumation remain to be understood. Here, we account for the continental margin subduction

Abstract Characteristic remanent magnetizations isolated from the late Variscan Altenberg–Teplice Caldera exhibit paleomagnetic directions, ranging from those consistent with the expected primary Late Carboniferous geomagnetic field to intermediate directions that significantly diverge from the dipole states.

VARNET-96: influence of the Variscan and Caledonian orogenies on crustal structure in SW Ireland [PDF]
SUMMARY VARNET, an international multidisciplinary project, was designed to examine the ‘Variscan Front’ in the southwest of Ireland. As part of the seismic experiment a 200 km long wide-angle seismic pro¢le (Line A) was recorded from the Old Head of Kinsale in the south of Ireland to Galway Bay on the west coast.

Geological investigations of the Lizard District, Cornwall, England: 1818–1883 [PDF]
A lower Paleozoic slab of oceanic lithosphere was obducted onto the southern margin of Avalonia during the Variscan orogeny and is now exposed throughout the Lizard District of Cornwall, England.

Abstract Earthquakes in intraplate regions are often scattered and difficult to associate with specific geological structures, requiring detailed surveys to identify active faults. Improving knowledge of local seismicity in these areas is essential for accurate seismic hazard assessment and for safe planning of economic activities that could affect ...
