Current transformers are used to monitor large currents within power grids and power stations, producing a current in the device’s secondary winding that is proportional to the current flowing in its primary winding. Varistors are used to protect current transformers by preventing an open circuit condition if the secondary is disconnected, which can ...

ZnO varistors—Preparation of nano and micro sized powders by mechanical methods for low and high voltage varistors [PDF]
ZnO-Bi2O3-Sb2O3 varistors are as essential today as they have been since their discovery five decades ago. Their role is to protect other electronic components against oncoming surges of electrons and survive.

Leakage Current Measurements of Surge Arresters
The paper presents the methods of assessing the technical condition of varistor surge arresters used in laboratory tests and in operation—performed without disconnecting the arresters from the network.

Electrical properties of magnesium titanate ceramics post-sintered by hot isostatic pressing [PDF]
Post-sintering of magnesium titanate ceramics by hot isostatic pressing (HIP) in an oxygen-free atmosphere significantly alters various electrical properties of the product. In particular, the sintered material becomes a semiconductor.

Hydrogen-induced degradation in SrTiO3-based ceramic varistors
For ZnO-based ceramic varistors, it was found that the current leakage is largely increased by the reduction of hydrogen generated in nickel electroplating and electroless nickel plating.

Control of Varistor Voltage by Grain-size Control of Bi-added ZnO Varistors
Relationship between the grain size of ZnO and the amounts of Bi and Sb for Bi-Ba-Sb-Co-Mn-added ZnO was investigated. The amount of Bi at which the grain size of ZnO became the maximum shifted to the notably larger one by adding small amount of Sb such as 0.01 mol%.
